i started to play Morrowind only a few months ago but dropped it. I really liked the scenery and it looks awfully great, but my problem was that I got lost somehow. I was running to a city where I could talk to NPCs, but my main problem is, that I somehow don't see a red line. I can run around and eventually I find somebody who has something to do for me, but there is no real questlog which helps me keep track of what I have to do and where. And I don't want to go back asking each and everry NPC just to find a guy I had a quest for.
Am I missing something or is this really such that I would have to write everything down?
I think it is a great game from its potential but I couldn't get over this so I lost interest even though I would like to play it.

The Tribunal expansion provides your journal with a "quest list", which will help with this problem (or at least it did help me ;). I'm not sure if anybody has made any kind of mod that would give this capacity to the "standard" game...

Is this an add-on or where can I get this?

It's an expansion pack for the game. I'd assume you can get it from a game shop or wherever you buy your games from. ;)

If you're on XBox, even with GOTY they cut corners and didn't improve the journal at all. The game rocks otherwise so I can easily forgive Bethesda for that ;)
Morrowind's greatest strength and it's greatest weakness is that it's not the typical rail-shooter variety RPG. It's a game where you can literally spend days doing nothing. Just yesterday I passed a cave that I never had seen before (or maybe I have, who can remember them all! :D )
I guess on about your 3rd or 4th character you'll get the hang of the game, till then enjoy what you can.
Actually a few things can help.
1) Get out the paper map that came with the game, it's your best friend till you kown where much of the major landmarks are (and at times I still forget which city is where on the west coast, but a quick look at the over-all map in-game can fix that too).
2) Many people when you ask them about locations that are important will mark them on your map for you, this helps in knowing were to head.
3) Take one of the fast transports to get around till you know where you're going (you can usually make enough money selling stuff you pick up around everywhere to pay your way around till you start earning money in some other way). (BTW, these are the Stilt Striders, those bug looking things at some of the cities, The Guild Guides who transport you from the various Mage Guild locations, and boats).
4) I've taken to sticking with one group till I've gone as far as I can (i.e. - Join the Fighters Guild, keep moving up till you've maxed out either in your skill or in the Guild itself). It's not as much variety, but it helps keep things simple for knowing what you're working on at any one time.
5) The exception to the above rule is joining a faction. I usually join a few factions and then pick one I want to work on for a while.
I've set my Mage aside because I didn't quite follow the above rules.... I wasn't sure where I was in the game when I had come back to it after playing other things for a while, so I wound up starting my current character.
Anyway...
Have fun, Morrowind is as much a sand box as it is a trip to take.
