I'm currently down in level 4 (the seemingly swampy area)...and I give one of the trolls (in the troll lair) a red gem, which in turn gives me access to a shrine. I noticed that I could recite the mantras I've collected so far over and over again and continuously raise my stats. Before I bother to actually play on like this.. I'd like to know if there are any strings attatched... and if the effects are permanent. It's just... too good to be true...

Just UU will do:p. The amount of mantras that will work depend on the amount of skill points that you've got. When they get to zero, you'll have to wait until you get more exp points. That is, unless you've encountered a bug that I wasn't aware of. In that case, there shouldn't be any ill effects later on - though I think that the game would not be anywhere near as enjoyable.

And the mantras are the ONLY WAY to increase your skills. SO unless you want to be totally horrible later in the game, it's advisable to increase your skills when you can. There are the three generic mantras, which increase randomly a few of your fighting, magic or utility skills, depending on the mantra.
There are also mantras for each individual skill, which you can use to increase them, which of course allows you much greater precision in what skills are to be increased. They have to be discovered at some points in your adventure though. I think the Knights of the Crux know most of the weapon mantras...

the specific mantra are only usefull for 'intelligence related skill' , or you would 'lose' some point... (+6 on a specific skill is less interesting than +3 on 3 skills or +3 on 4 skills)
