Question about IP logging... - by Despot

Curious: what's the point of logging an IP address, since most dial-up servers assign IPs dynamically?
Or does it log the IP of the server, and banning an IP bans all people using that ISP?

Well, with IP logging, we can ban ISP's. For instance, if someone that we want to ban has the ip address of 255.260.240.23, we can ban: "255.260.*.*" or something like that. That can translate to anyone that uses AOL, or any other service provider.
Also, since more and more people are getting high-speed connections, which usually use static IP addresses, we can ban them as well.

so if one idoit from freeserve comes online and recks the forums, everyone on freeserve gets banned? isn't that abit harsh?

That's my point, we can either ban a single IP or a whole domain of IP's. Since the internet still respect's people's privacy, tracking people down is still a bit hard, but this is a good step forward.

But, banning a single IP wouldn't do much good, since there's still a lot of people with dynamically assigned IPs, right?
If so, you're basically stuck banning a domain...

Yeah, basically banning someone is pretty difficult to maintain.

Alright, thanks for explaining that...
