Just finished the new expansion (Dimension of the Machine). That was awesome. I kinda wish they had used some guns/creatures that weren't in the OG campaign (like the alt-fire modes and some of the better monsters from the OG expansions) but overall it was great.

I'm enjoying it well enough, but Arcane Dimensions truly spoiled me. It's tough for any new quake to come close to that.

Can Arcane Dimensions be played with the new Steam release? And if so, is it just a case of downloading it and dropping it in the right folder?

Not in any convenient way, you'll have gamesys and string issues. You'll need to use a source port like (
https://triptohell.info/moodles/qss/) Quakespasm-spiked, (
https://github.com/Novum/vkQuake/releases/tag/1.11.0) vkQuake or Darkplaces.
Extract the source port somewhere, copy the
id1 directory (from the original Quake dir) and
music directory (from the remaster dir) there, then extract the contents of Arcane Dimensions to a directory named
ad. You can launch it by calling "game ad" from the console or simply create a shortcut that appends
-game ad to the .exe call.
EDIT: added links.

First couple of levels already great fun - solid machinegames level design and interesting, fun encounter design incorporating some well-designed new enemy types.

Yeah it looks cool! Loved Machinegames' last episode, will try to make time for this one soon.

Important note:
Dawn of the Machine is currently only available through Steam. The GOG and EGS versions have not yet been updated on their respective stores.
Even then, the Steam version includes quake_egs.exe and quake_gog.exe, it just seems like Bethesda has neglected to push it to GOG and EGS for whatever reason.

I played the first 3 levels. Ran around in level 2 for 47 minutes trying to find all the secrets but only got 10/12. Level 3 has a fantastic twist which I won't spoil. A lot of fresh ideas in here. So much love has gone into these levels that I have to wonder if Bethesda even needs to commision them or if Machinegames just make em for fun. Some fun new twists on old enemy designs too.

I spent a lot of time looking for secrets in most levels I've been through so far. Haven't gotten a full clear yet, but I did get one level where I only missed a single secret. I've reached "Of Shattered Minds", which is the 5th regular level from what I can tell.
As far as gameplay goes, it's quake with some neat twists. I both like and dislike the limited health and ammo capacity. From a design perspective, it's a different type of challenge than usual and there's supposedly a loop going on (where you have to collect runes and then start over a couple of times, opening new doors and paths). But in the moment to moment gameplay I sometimes feel like I'm missing out in a major way if I don't hunt down every secret. In a "It sure would have been nice to carry 200 nails into this fight" and "Enemies hurt way more* when you can't heal to 100" way.
*As a percentage of your health.
