It's worth noting that only the Shareware levels are part of the free offer, you'll need a full copy of Q2 to play the entire game with RTX.

Graphically it looks the same as Quake Enhanced / Dark Places that was released in 2008 or so. I have the version with the 2 normal expansions

Does this version restore the Nine Inch Nails soundtrack lost in copyright Limbo?

Good to hear! Its absence might be why I never got far when replaying the game, despite it being my second-favorite shooter of the era (after Serious Sam).

I was actually pretty good at Quakeworld, regularly ranking in the top 3 on public servers back in the day. 1998 though, so I highly doubt I would retain any skill these days. Yeh and knowledge of the map was king.
A big difference between now and then is that it was easy to find public servers back then with a lot of casual players and future hardcore players just starting out. The casual players all disappeared about 20 years ago when it became necessary to master bunny hopping, rocket jumping, etc. in order to have a chance. For me, having to bunny hop all the time took a lot of fun out of the game. I gave up online deathmatch and started playing CTF and Painkeep instead. Painkeep was huge fun, and it didn't attract competitive players, so I stuck with that for a while. Now the hardcore players have had 20 years to get even better and I don't remember many of the maps. I'd have to put in hours and hours with bots learning the maps again before I'd dare poke my head into a public Quake server.

Not that anyone cares what I thought about Quake a quarter of a century ago, but after all the hype around it I remember being quite disappointed about it. It looked nice enough despite all the brownness, but as a game I never found it very fun. The guns in particular felt really bland. Never played deathmatch or anything though, maybe that's where all the fun was. I went back to good old Doom and Duke 3D, and it wasn't until year or two later when Unreal really blew my mind.
There, just had to share that with you all. :D

heywood thats a good point. I played when it was at its peak in popularity, so yeh a lot of casual players.
I do recall me and a mate playing on empty servers just to practice rocket jumping.

Tomi: Yeah, I've been looking at the screens and videos and thinking "maybe I should give this version a go" and then having to remind myself that every single time I've tried Quake I've found it incredibly dull, and a new coat of paint really isn't going to change that impression. I'm sure plenty of people enjoyed both, but the old Quake vs Duke 3D rivalry existed for valid reasons.

Yep. In my teenaged opinion, Duke 3D was a wildly unbalanced game that relied entirely on spectacle and humor for its appeal. The jokes and explosions were fun the first time, but not after that... whereas Quake, both visually and audially, had a weird, austere geometric beauty that repetition did not diminish. But you could have asked a teenage Fox, "Why should I waste my time fighting the same eight enemies over and over again in locations that make no sense and all kinda look alike?" And I would not have been able to answer.
Then I would have gone to a bathroom stall, locked myself inside, and cried for an entire class period, it being high school and all.
