This remaster is a free update for anyone who owns it on Steam! I played a bit and yeah, the lighting looks nicer and animations are smoother. Looks great, without being updated so much as to not feel like Quake anymore.
The remaster was made by Nightdive, and there's also a new episode designed by Machine Games, which I haven't played yet, but I'm curious.

The updated models are lovely and the two Machine Games episodes are very good.
As for the KEX port itself, it's close enough to a source port that it will run a large number of maps and can be recommended to first-timers, but not enough to be compatible out of the box with major mods (AD, Copper, Quoth). It's not far though, so I am hopeful that the game can be patched into supporting all custom maps/mods and becoming a viable alternative to QSS/vkQuake. EDIT: Looking at the decisions behind updating progs.dat, it seems more likely that the community mods and source ports will have to change their code to keep compatibility. Shucks.
It also seems to have nice multiplayer options.
EDIT 2 more thoughts: my brain is utterly failing to adjust to the new upsampled sounds and the input lag is real. Feels a bit different to play.

I never played any of the expansion packs.
Had a brief look at the first one, was rather taken aback at it giving me a maximum health of 50 on Nightmare.

That may be the new update. That would be taking the idea straight out of Copper which would be strange for a default setting...

Playing through the Dimension of the Past episode now, which was apparently released by Machine Games 5 years ago. It's really good! Playing on Hard and it's kicking my ass. Constantly on the edge of running out of ammo to the point where I occasionally just have to sprint past enemies.
edit: finished it! Yup, that was great. Y'know, I thought I had Quake 1 firmly in the rear view mirror, but after 20 years I'm kinda hooked on this game again. :D Gonna play their new episode tomorrow.

Having a great time revisiting Quake! The new models are really well done - they fit the aesthetic rather than just being hi-res and out of place.
Just played through Dimension of the Past, and that is some really great level design. Starting to see why Wolfenstein New Order was so good now.

They've removed some classic features, i.e. shortcut hotkeys. F2, F3, F10 for save menu, load menu and quick quit are gone. +/- to increase/decrease HUD size are gone. The few seconds boot up lag from being forced to sign into a Bethesda.net account I could certainly do without.
That being said the new source port is overall decent. Certainly lightyears better than the primitive as fuck Unity ones which were done for classic Doom 1/2 about a year ago.
I just finished the first Machine Games episode. They certainly ratchet up the difficulty in later levels. I only managed to defeat the remaining two Shamblers on the last level by cheesing the A.I., getting them to run into a wall corner while I axed them to death.

I really don't get why it has that forced Bethesda.net sign in. What use is that?
