There was a question on The Weakest Link the other day involving insect shells and that. Anne Robinson pronounced it KY-tin. Anyone want to argue with her? :-)

I was just wondering - how do you pronounce:
Chicken (do you say *K*icken or *TJ*icken)
Chitin (do you say *K*itin or *TJ*itin)
Tai-Chi (do you say Tai-*K*i or Tai-*TJ*i)
Chimera (do you say *K*imera or *TJ*imera)
Chill (do you say *K*ill or *TJ*ill) - this one stands out, right?
I don't give darn!!! Pronounce: Penis!

**This just in, a recent poll shows 100% agreement with the "Dont Give a Damn" point of view**
Does it really matter how anything is pronounced in MW? you know why all the dialog is in text form? because no one could pronounce words like alkandragrinfelldergrad.

Yeah, but unlike alkandragrinfelldergrad, chitin is a real word ;)

REAL WORD is???
A word like alkandragrinfelldergrad is composed by letters - just like chitin... I don't think that your disability to pronounce the word should constitute the definition of what is real or not!

Hrm... unless I accidentally stuck my foot in my mouth because ES used a word in a language I'm unfamiliar with (most of them, really), he just banged on the keyboard, right? And if that is a word in such a language, please disregard the post in question. But if he just banged on a keyboard, then it's not a "real word" because it doesn't have a well-defined pronunciation and/or meaning.
Exodus_dk on 28/6/2002 at 10:49
ROFL!
Good call - however, if he thought about the way it looked for just 2 sec. wouldn't it then be a real word... And anyhow - how would you characterize a word? I'd say something composed of letters... No need for meaning!
OR perhaps it's just an abbreviation for something even more puzzeling! :cheeky:

*laugh* Okay, picky, here's more-or-less exactly what I was meaning by "real word":
A series of characters, from a well-defined alphabet, whose arrangement in a particular order is recogniseable to a significant portion of people/machines/etc. (ie: more than 3 or 4) as representing a concept or an object of some sort. Thus 'elsif' is a word, as it is a well-known programming directive, but 'hoppabillyfumanchuwangotangoweeheee' holds no innate representation of anything in particular (its parts might, but it holds none).
Happy? ;)

I pronounce it Shit-in ...heh

Happy? ;) VERY HAPPY! :) Gotta love this debate...
Would you consider Waterdeep or Myth Drannor real words?
How about Shangri-la or the garden of eden?
Balmora, Vivec or Vvardenfell?
When Arkthrangarnd(or what the bloody hell...?!?) is the name of an imaginary location - then I don't think you could consider it any less real than the above... Just because you not yet have some relation to the location - and can't pronounce it - wouldn't make the word anymore unreal than the location it tries to describe... And if you don't consent to this argument consider terms as love, pain, anger, joy and fear... feelings are real - in our heads, and thus in the world around us! If we begin to have a conversation about an imagined place like those above - then they also exists in that moment - just because they're mentioned - and thus they must be real...
Your call.... :sly:
