I don't think he was justifying piracy. Merely explaining it.
demagogue on 26/5/2012 at 17:52
He's pissed that the movie is delayed for Germany, and part of that pissyness is observing the hypocrisy or at least cognitive-dissonance of the movie industry delaying a movie a 1/4 of a year for major countries on the one hand and bitching about piracy on the other. It's like he wants to tell them: Maybe if you released it here along with everyone else we wouldn't feel like such suckers waiting like dolt sheep for three months while all these pirated copies are swarming around us that heaven forbid we might actually be tempted to watch just to see your movie before the rest of the world stops talking about it because now it's like last season's movie... He just wants it released it earlier & dramatized how he feels waiting, not really about piracy itself pro or con.
SubJeff on 26/5/2012 at 18:38
I dunno guys, he seems pretty sympathetic to it, like the reasons resonate with him.
dj_ivocha on 26/5/2012 at 22:01
SubjEff, I didn't say I will pirate it, just that every time the entertainment industry screams about piracy, at least a bit of the problem is the inability to get the stuff legally.
Obviously a lot of people would pirate it even if it launched simultaneously everywhere in the world, from Russia to the Principality of Sealand, but those people wouldn't be potential paying customers anyway. The ones who WANT to pay to watch it but have to wait 3 months, on the other hand...
I'm not gonna pirate it and I almost certainly will go to see it in a cinema in august, but that doesn't mean I have to like how I'm being treated as a customer. Especially since that happens every year with at least a couple of interesting movies.
Also what demagogue said, all of it.
SubJeff on 26/5/2012 at 23:09
This entitlement bs is just that, bs.
It's coming to Germany isn't it? So how is that unavailable?
I fully understand the "not legally obtainable" argument/issue and piracy but that isn't the case here, it's just impatience and entitlement bs.

I'm afraid you've gone off on a slight tangent there SubEff, and decided to get annoyed about an opinion that dj_ivocha doesn't hold. I'd suggest reading more carefully before getting too excited in future...
I would also say that this odd delayed release thing they do invites piracy - that's the main point under discussion. It has nothing to do with some feeling of "entitlement" as far as I can see.
SubJeff on 27/5/2012 at 07:00
I agree that it may invite piracy but I have no sympathy with the reasoning.
It is dj's sarcasm that suggests to me a sympathizer. Which isn't to say I think he will pirate it.

Who's being entitled, here? The guy who wants his money to be able to buy something when it's available regardless of which (industrialized first-world) nation he's in, or the company that thinks it can stiff a significant market with a three month delay and not pay a serious financial penalty?
I'll give you a clue. Entitlement is wanting something
without paying for it. A paying customer is by simple definition not entitled. But a major corporation that "can't" (meaning "won't") provide what any shmuck with a phone and an internet connection
can (crappily) provide but still wants the cash?
That's entitlement.
I gotta go with Valve on this one: the best deterrent to piracy is providing better customer service than the pirates. Failing to provide that is no justification for piracy, but on the flip side, piracy is no justification for bad customer service.

I know that for some reason on these forums the term "entitlement" solely refers to a false subjective feeling of being entitled to something, which you are actually NOT entitled to. But that's not what the word means. Just saying.
SubJeff on 28/5/2012 at 20:50
Pyrian - let me explain, in a sadly somewhat tedious, but seemingly necessary, manner.
I'll have to correct Koyal first because I think he has misinterpreted something important, and tempting as it is to just be snarky about it I believe this is just a genuine mistake.
Koyla - you are incorrect. I mean entitlement, as in having some rightful claim over something. What I'm saying is that some people seem to think they are entitled to things just because they want it. It may not seem like that at first but that's what it boils down to - "I can't get it now and I want it I want it I want it waaaah if you can't give it to me now I'll pirate it".
Now, people seem to think that I'm incorrectly lambasting dj over this. Allow me to clarify; it is this statement;
Quote:
No, better sue some more of them filthy pirates for a gazillion dollars each and introduce ever more DRM and various other "features" that only make life harder for the customers but not for the actual pirates.
that clearly contains a degree of sarcasm that irks me. With it dj is equating the delay with piracy in just the same way as one might equate having your wallet stolen with leaving it in your unlocked car. Yes, it's silly and will possibly end in some foreseen untoward event, but that is not a reason to agree with the theft. There is no doubt that impatient Germans will pirate the film because of the delay, but I have difficulty having sympathy with such impatience
especially where it may impact on something that is of high quality.
