As far as I remember, Red is quite hard to listen :erg: (meaning very complex)
I didn't find that at all, I found it very accessible actually (and it was one of my first experiences with prog rock).
Also, if king crimson is coming up (and it should), Mastodon should also. Still along the prog-metal path, their latest album has some very noticeable (and unhidden) king crimson inspiration. Vocals make it a little inaccessible for some, but once you get past that there is some good stuff.

Sorry, but I keep to prefere the quiet, melodic and dreamer style of Pink Floyd (that ones after Barrett defection, of course).

Jethro Tull, King Crimson (with Bruford, especially) and Genesis (with Gabriel, mostly) were my faves. Curved Air, Brand X, Weather Report, Gentle Giant, PFM, Nektar, Focus, Trace, Schicke Fuehrs und Froehling...
An identifying feature of prog was that most of these bands flirted with jazz, historical, world beat and played tonsil hockey with classical music. (ahhhh... gotta get that old dual turntable set up!).
For me the god-child of the movement was My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (possibly the crowning achievement in pre-digital studio recordings).

I have a much better example, one of the greatest things ever seen on youtube.
I'm sure some people have heard of the Dark Side of the Moon sync-up with The Wizard of Oz, but it doesn't really work that well if you actually try it. However, below is the real deal. This is Echoes synced-up with the last part of the movie 2001 Space Odyssey. Just watch the mastery unfold (in a dark room with head phones on) and tell me that this song is not perfectly made for that movie. This is mind shattering:

But they aren't Glam Rock? I don't recognize them as progressive.
