I've invoked Tarkus a couple times here recently in ways too unrelated to rock, progressiveness, or general good taste to even try and bring it up again. Lake did have an amazing set of pipes though, yeah.

We're gonna break Stitch's little heart, aren't we.
To be honest, I'll happily concede that the Mars Volta are well past their peak despite the fact that I still enjoy them. I like what they do, but they seem to be aiming for an increasingly narrow audience.
And besides, comments from you or Aja that they suck register as little impact as can be expected. Right then, moving on.

Classic Genesis, and their titled *Genesis* from later. Home by the Sea, great great tune.
"Home By The Sea" is anything but not prog :D it's in the pop period of Genesis, and the song is definitively pop, like the very famous "Land Of Confusion" or "Invisible Touch". We tend to label a band with the genere that they made before, ignoring that in the meanwhile a band could have change direction, like Genesis (or Queen) did.

Tarkus is one of the best progressive songs. ELP was a jtr7's fixation, IIRC.

Just listened to Mars Volta on their myspace. I don't think I would describe them as sucky, edgy, or un-music. They're fine, even though I don't feel the need to explore their music any further (maybe their older stuff is better).

I just listened to one of their newer songs. My god it's terrible, but a bit better than what I've heard. By which I mean they're slowly inching towards something that might be considered listenable- if you were certifiably insane and enjoyed the sound of a grocery cart rolling down a New York City staircase.

I completely understand someone hating The Mars Volta. I hated them too, when I first heard it. And later, it sunk in and then I loved it, go figure. But music is extremely polarizing so it's not something to get worked up about.
What amazes me about music though, is the fact that people enjoy talking more about how much they dislike a band rather than talking about the bands they like, and now that I think of it I think it's obvious. It's because we all know deep down that someone else thinks the music we like is a piece of shit, so it's safer to fling shit rather than try to contribute.
I wouldn't be surprised if dethtoll had a ratio of 10 to 1, that is 10 comments telling other people how much their bands/taste suck to 1 where he contributes the bands he enjoys himself.
We all like music that other people think is shit, people -- we get it. Lets get over that and talk about the music we like, I would hope this thread finds me good music, rather than 70 pages of wasted reading.
For example, I'm liking Isis thusfar, can you recommend me a specific song or album to start with?
Edit: Just listened to Riverside - Hyperactive. Good stuff!

I'm a diehard Metallica fan (pre 90's)
Some phenomenal progressive stuff (progressive instrumental metal) from these four albums would be:
To Live is to Die - '88 (my all time favorite progressive metal track)
Orion - '85
The Call of Ktulu - '84
(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth - '83
Ordered favorite to least favorite (but all amazing).
Welcome to airwave heaven:cool:

I don't own much prog rock, though I've enjoyed what I've heard by Yes, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, etc. I think all I do have is Porcupine Tree's Sky Moves Sideways, which is quite nice.
I had a brief prog metal period, and the best thing to enter my collection from that was probably Dream Theater's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which is pretty solid throughout. Maybe a sidenote would be Symphony X's The Odyssey, but that's a little too hit-and-miss for me to wholeheartedly recommend.
And deth, speaking of Isis I'll narrow the question further: Oceania or Panopticon?
