That article is awesome.

That PC Zone ish is now in the hands of subscribers, and (
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=198546) here's a tease of what's in the article.
Quote:
In essence, it looks and sounds fantastic. The art direction is a beautiful meld of the renaissance and cyberpunk (tying into the game's Leonardo Da Vinci motif) and is going for a lot more stylised look than the sort of game that comes from the Unreal Engine cookie-cutter.
It sounds like Eidos Montreal isn't leaving anything to chance; a "powerful, layered" plot is promised for the third game - which has been confirmed as a prequel set in 2027- and the dev has even drafted in the consultative talents of original writer Sheldon Pacotti, while also gaining the blessing of both Harvey Smith and Warren Spector on the project.
...
Perhaps controversially this time around combat won't be influenced by stats, but will rely purely on your personal marksmanship skills. Instead stats will influence "a vast array of fully upgradeable and customisable weapons", and you'll be able to tailor your arsenal to your play style with mag upgrades, scopes and other add-ons.
What's more, stealth will now rely on a cover system rather than shadows, and damage will be dealt with by a very Call of Duty-style auto-heal. There's probably going to be some debate over those two.
Augmentations have been bumped up and sound fantastic. 20 have been promised for the final game, ranging from 'bungee jump' tentacles that shoot from your back and anchor to a wall when you jump off a building, and the ability to punch through walls to grab enemies in neighbouring rooms.

Before I start raving, would it be entirely unethical to ask if any such subscribers and, at the same time, proud owners of scanners frequent this little corner of the internet? :p
And now let the shitfest begin.

As if we all couldn't imagine what happens when you throw sloppy excrements at the fast spinning blades of a fan, Eidos Montreal seem to want to show us.

The two examples sorta sound like fun. A bit more like comic book superpowers than most of the old augs (note I said "most"), but I guess they could turn out to be very cool.

Eidos Montreal says it's more than aware of fan reaction to controversial second game, Invisible War, and promises mistakes, such as limiting ammo types to just one, won't be repeated.
Coolsies. Thank you. Though with them dumping our lovely hide-in-shadows stealth system in favour of a "cover system" and the detailed damage mechanics for "Call of Duty-style auto-heal" I can't help feel the above statement might not be entirely true.

Deus Ex 3 certainly sounds very, very promising -
if a little controversial for die-hard PC fans.I was afraid you'd say that.
P.S.

I know my response will be predictable, but I really don't like the sound of some of these choices.
Like someone said in those CVG comments, it sounds way too action-oriented. Maybe when I learn more I'll think otherwise, but I'm really disappointed with this initial information.
If you check my previous posts, you'll see my default response to anticipated games is not to be a hater. I'm not another whiney pessimist.
But for me personally, a significant reason the original Deus Ex stood out from the crowd was because its design represented more of an adventure game involving exploration and NPC interaction than a first-person shooter.
Maybe I'm completely misinterpreting this early information and over-reacting -- and I sincerely hope I am -- but at this point it sounds more action-oriented than a Deus Ex game should be and it sounds like the developers are infusing more influence from recent successful action franchises than they should for a Deus Ex game.
Can anyone with this issue of PC Zone in their hands reassure me that they provide legitimate non-violent ways to proceed in Deus Ex 3?
And while it's great to see they addressed Invisible War's ridiculous universal ammo, what about the clunky and restrictive inventory system? Or the lack of a meaningful skill/experience point system? Does the article provide any information on these matters?
Edit: Just read this at the DX3 forum:

The game is third person but will switch perspective for stealth

the game is first person but switches to third for the cover system. Apologies for error- I'm typing on a phone

Yeah, I saw that. Much relief on my part, but I still don't like being removed from the first-person perspective at all.
It sounds like they're going more Metal Gear Solid than Thief with the stealth mechanics. Maybe it will work in its own right and in the end I'll learn to love it, but as an admitted Thief fanboy I just have to admit my own personal disappointment with this direction.
Having said that, the visual style looks fantastic. It's different than either of the previous Deus Ex games (so it might be controversial), but I think they've really managed to find an art direction that is both compelling and genuinely original. It looks more BioShock than Gears of War or Call of Duty (thank goodness), but it has its own unique flair as well.
Check out these high-rez photos (not scans, so they're a tad blurry) of the magazine:

Sorry, I've edited this post per Vraptor7's request. The scans are freely available on Eidos's official DX3 forum if you want to see them.
-------
(My apologies if I'm not supposed to post these... but as they're photos and not scans and as the official DX3 forum isn't blocking them, I thought it would be okay. Also, I'm not posting them here... I'm linking you to where they're posted. :thumb: )

I'm looking at the scans posted in that Eidos forum thread, and for the most part I like what I see in terms of art style.
But in terms of gameplay description . . . I'm not too enthused. It sounds like they're going to focus too much on action, at the expense of stealth and character building. I mean, stats having no effect on combat abilities and auto-heal? Come on.
Twist on 4/10/2008 at 13:39
I'm with you there, but from what I understand the auto-healing may be another misunderstanding.
And while I'm a little disappointed and confused about the way they're handling stats, several people have mentioned that they have in fact included a detailed stats system like the original Deus Ex.
I think we need to sit back and wait for more detail and clarity on this game.
There seems to be quite a bit of misinterpretation and miscommunication from the people reading and sharing what little glimpse is provided in this latest issue of PC Zone.
