Problems with movies/cutscenes... - by labrekk

Hello,
I used to be a big Thief gamer, but haven't played for like 2 years, before yesterday. I upgraded my computer since the last time I played. It was impossible to play T2, I applied the DDFX fix and now it works. The problem is now that I can't play the cutscenes. For example, if I try a mission and I die, the game will crash to desktop. I tried all of this and nothing worked:
My ingame movies (briefings and cutscenes) aren't playing anymore, how do I fix it?
You have to reinstall the indeo video codecs. You will find them on Thief: TDP's disc, and on disc 1 of Thief Gold. If you have Thief 2, you can find them on CD2 (the file is iv5play.exe). In the past you could also download them from this site for free, but unfortunately the codecs have since turned pay-for. This problem often arises because of conflicts with some other programs such as Realplayer or Windows Media Player, the video codecs become corrupted and no longer work. There is an incompatibility between the Indeo codecs and Windows XP. If you wish to view the ingame movies and have Windows XP you must install the codecs every time you play Thief.
Alternatively:
Scrooge's Permanent Movie Fix
1) Locate (use "Search") the file named "regsvr32.exe". It is located in the Windows SYSTEM directory (if 9x/ME) or SYSTEM32 (if 2K/XP). Copy it in your thief installation.
2) Create a text document named "RegIndeo.bat" and copy/paste the following text:
"regsvr32.exe /s LGVID.AX" (without quotes)
3) Save it (The file extension must be .bat)
Simply double-click on the file when your movies don't play.
Note: it is not needed to repeat the operation in all your installed Thief/Gold/II, simply use one of them. The "registration" process will fix the problems in all installed Thief games present.
A third option if the above have failed:
1) Press Start
2) Press Run
3) Type regsvr32 "c:\your\path\to\thief\LGVID.AX" where c:\your\path\to\thief\ matches your own path.
4) You should get a message box pop up that says dllregisterserver in module c:\your\path\to\thief\LGVID.AX suceeded.
Having trouble with Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Thief Video Codecs?
Then you may need to download this version of the codecs. Thanks Schattentänzer.
Maybe the problem is that since I play lots of .avi movies on my computer, I once set all .avi movies to be played by Windows Media Player, or GOM Media Player? When I go to my T2 directory, all the stuff in the Movies folder has the GOM player icon and thus are opened by it when I click on them. How can I change it back to make the Indeo codec play them?
Thanks for any tip to help solve my problem. I'd like to play T2 again, as well as fan-made missions.

If you have more than one video or sound file player, then make one of the video players the only one to play certain files. I only use WinMedia for WMA or other specific Windows proprietory files.
And the same for your sound. I have WinMeadia player,a creative player, a roxio player, a sony player and all of them will play any sound file.
I all play/record files disabled on all of them except the creative card.

I'm not too sure if I understand what you meant. Could you be clearer? Thanks.

Try the
iv5setup.exe you'll find (
http://www.darktales.gamers.de/00000095a9128f216/00000096e40e0b801/00000096e40e0b804.html) here.
Usually fixes a codec-problem most newer systems have with Indeo Video Codecs, which are necessary for playing the thief ingame movies. You can also install the indeo codec itself, which you'll find above the other DL.
Windows erases those codecs automatically if rebooted, so you'd have to install them before starting the game, that's why I prefer the ivsetup.

I'll try the one on the site you mention, but I did try to reinstall the one that it's on disc#2 of Thief 2, as well as the one that I found in one of the FAQ and technical pages I read, and it didn't solve my problem...
Is there a chance that reinstalling the game could help?

You should play thief in administrator mode

As there is only one profile on my computer, is it the same thing that the administrator mode?

Should be.

Actually, I meant that all users on the home computer have the same account (mine), so there must be 2 accounts, mine and the Administrator one.
I uninstalled both Thief 2 and Thief 2X yesterday. Will reinstall them tonight if I find the time. Hopefully, the video problems will be resolved...
