The purpose of the fixed EXE is to solve the safe texture manager problem for T1. The parameter safe_texture_manager does nothing in T1 -- it is for T2 only. Try removing your safe_texture_manager line for confirmation.
I don't see any discussion here of the video card / drivers, or I missed it. If you use the wrong Nvidia drivers, Thief 1 / Gold will crash. If you have an Nvidia card, you should use drivers 163.75. 169.xx are broken. I believe the 170 series may work again, but I have no personal experience with it.

I am also having the same problems. Per the recommendation of another thread poster, I tried using a driver cleaner to help revert back to a 163 version with no luck.
I have also tried the fixed EXE and hyper threading fixes with no luck. I've re downloaded the .exe and even tried other versions with no luck.
This HAS worked on this system before, but I just freshly installed and haven't been able to get it working since. I am starting to think its some sort of external software (i.e. no Thief related) that's causing this, like a codec or something. I'll post back if I can figure it out.
Here is the event I get every time at the black screen (I have to force quit):

I'm getting this same error, and I get it right before the main menu appears. Once the menu appears, it is frozen and the error window is there. Anyone found a fix yet?

My symptoms are different. I get all load screens. Mine goes black after clicking "play mission". I never see 1 second of the map, but I get every other screen. Mine are identical to the texture issue, but I have applied that fix.
I have also tried removing every codec, movie player, video editor, etc from my system and reinstalled Thief with no luck. I don't really think I have any software left that would conflict with it at this point. This is very frustrating since before formatting, everything worked on the same hardware AND drivers.

I know I have tried more versions than this, but today, these are the drivers I have tried to get Thief Gold working on my 8800GTX.
171.16
169.21
163.75
162.18
158.27
None will work, all have the exact same symptom. I don't think I can go any further back. I do know that 163.75 has worked before. Any settings or software that anyone figures out will be very appreciated.

I reported similar problem: (

So removing line "skip_intro" from the "cam.cfg" might help and pressing keyboard to interrupt movie instead of mouse (for me it did). I'm running Thief1 ver 1.33 without any other modifications under XP and Nvidia 8800GTS 640 MB - with drivers ver 169.21...

I don't have time to read the whole thread, so this may have been suggested before. In addition to using the right Nvidia driver, which is 163.75, you need to do two things:
Use the modified EXE that solves the safe_texture_manager problem for T1 when using Nvidia cards. Links to modified EXEs for three TDP and gold versions are found in the FAQ.
(
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031#texturememory)
Set affinity for that modified EXE so it runs on only one processor. This can be cone manually in the Task Manager, or you can back it up and use IMAGECFG for a permanent fix.

Anyone else having a problem getting TG to run full screen? I installed DDFIX so I could run TG with my GeForce 7800GS card. It worked but I can only get it to run in a window, not full screen. I set the resolution equal to the native and it appeared full screen, but the cam always pointed toward the sky no matter where I looked. Any ideas?
