Oh,
that "fixed .exe"
I've got my thief gold set to windows 2000 compatibility, and i also checked the "turn off advanced text services" box. Probably ain't gonna help, but try that.
Interesting problem - Usually thief either won't run at all, or crashes when you try to get to the game. But in your case, if I understood you correctly, you were actually able to play the training mission. Very strange.

So the newer drivers are a bad thing in some cases. Is it patched ? Have you tried a re-install?
In his case, Thief Gold is already patched (v1.37) and there is no other official patch for it. In terms of reinstall, that is a good idea.
@Gechmir: So yeah, it might be the drivers. People with newer cards all have problems, but I haven't heard of something like this before I don't think. Good luck in finding the solution.
Oh, and also, its typical when troubleshooting that the person who posts puts some system specs up for use to try to help better. You might want to go back and edit your first post and add that in. Just my .02 cents.

Just reinstalled Thief Gold, can't get it run, either...
I did try tweaking process affinity, compatibility modes, the abovementioned "fixed exe" for textures, process affinity &/^ compatibility modes for that tweaked exe... Still, get a crash as soon as I try to run it (well, after a 10-20 seconds pause).
System specs are:
Intel D515GAGL mainboard,
Intel P4 3.0 GHz CPU (HT) processor,
Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express chipset 128MB onboard video,
Realtek onboard audio,
1GB RAM
Strangely, it *does* run (only with process affinity set -- didn't even try without it) on my FS Amilo Pro v3505 nootebook, which is almost identical, with:
(No idea what mainboard),
Intel Core2 T5500 @ 1.66GHz,
Movile Intel 945GM Express chipset 128MB video,
Realtek onboard audio,
1GB RAM
Of course, there's a LOT of difference in what *soft*ware is installed... Like, when I looked up the list of video codecs on my PC, it has *exactly* 200 other than lgvid.ax... Could that be an issue (it possibly is with Thief 2, because I almost always have it crash when it tries to play a video, even standard end-mission failure/success after playing for a while -- always have to restart and restore from a quick-save point made just when final objectives trigger, and it works OK then).
sNeaksieGarrett on 7/1/2008 at 16:32
Hmm, that is weird.:weird: Well, as far as the video codecs go, iv5play.exe is on one of the thief discs, which will install the codecs needed for the movies. Or, you could rename lgvid.ax to like _lgvid.ax and then just watch the movies in your favorite media player.

It seems to me that both computers have a dual core so to speak, one has Hyperthreading (first one) and the other one has a core2 processor - I'm not really familiar with it though. I assume you tried the task manager affinity trick, but failing that you should try the permanent fix if you haven't already.
Not sure what the problem is, but I should point out that you may try different combos of tricks, or using one or the other. Maybe some other taffer will be of more help.:)

Can you be more specific about the crash? So you double click the Thief shortcut, wait 10 - 20 seconds and you see that "Send Error Report" window appear?
CheeseshireCat on 9/1/2008 at 13:29
Not exactly. I have the reporing feature disabled, so I click (or run thef.exe from command prompt -- whatever), then 10-20s later get a standard Windows window like this:
[Thief 1.37: thief.exe - Application Error]
(X) The instruction at “0x1d24151d” referenced memory at “0x00000000”. The memory could not be read'.
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
[OK] [Cancel]

Sorry, I'm not that well in translating technical terms to tell if you already noticed that your P4-Processor usually works with Hyperthreading.
You need to start Thief - but only until the Menu shows up, then leave the game via alt-tab and open Task Manager... (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031#hyperthread) just have a look here.
If you already tried that forget that I said it.
CheeseshireCat on 19/1/2008 at 06:58
Sneaksie and xxcoy: Yep, tried both of these... And nope, xxcoy, it crashes *before* it even gets to menu (not that I'd bother to change processor affinity manually every time after I start it -- I just fixed it on the exe itself...)
xxcoy on 19/1/2008 at 15:58
So you are using a changed THIEF.exe?
Did you try the original?
Do you get any error-message? Does DX-Diag possibly indicate "Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer"?
You might try the (
http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/16bit_fix.htm) 16bit-Ms-DOS-subsystem-fix either, also should have your 3D-Options set to let the program decide its settings itself if possible...
But reading your reply, I don't think you didn't try that already.

I just got Thief Gold running on XP by using the fixed .exe and also adding this line to the user.cfg file. safe_texture_manager, I figured it worked for Thief 2 why not this. Now I can enjoy a nice relaxing game of original Thief on XP.
I may not have to dual boot for much longer.
