Howdy folks. First post here, and it starts off to a technical issue, I'm afraid!
H'okay. I played Thief 1 (Gold) & Thief 2 ages ago. Thief 3 was the gateway drug, I must admit :D I never finished #1, but #2 was a work of art. I'm doing a full run-through of the series. So, I hit a problem right from the get-go.
I use Thief Gold (1.37, technically I think), and I applied the fixed .EXE prior to playing; I know that there are issues running these two installments of awesome on XP and newer :(
Here's the trouble -- I got the fixed .EXE and applied the high-res textures patch (Hardware one) and didn't have a problem in the training level. Ran great, and I played to the end. I did the movie-fix so cinematic scenes would work properly, too.
Upon reaching the end of the training level, all seemed great. Cutscenes worked out and I began the first real level. Well, it was late and I figured that there was no sense in playing later right now, since I know it works. I closed the game after the first real level loaded, no issues visible.
I just tried reloading Thief Gold, and I had a save at the last couple seconds of the tutorial level. I simply go to the end and it begins to load. Cinematic cutscenes work alright, but after I choose "Play Mission" at the equipment selection screen, the game hangs up and crashes.
tl;dr
Thief Gold has a boo boo.
I'm running on a dual processor, and have checked affinities for Thief Gold while it runs; it only goes off of one processor, and I've tried flip-flopping to no avail.
My drivers are FAR from behind =( I've got an Alienware 9750 and this laptop is more than enough to run it. I can load levels but there seems to be a hang-up point. I'm going to try a few more things but I'm losing hope. Anyone here got an idea/animal to sacrifice? :3
Edit --
Apologies for putting the thread in the wrong subsection =(
I tested Thief 2, had trouble, but then noticed that the affinity was set for two cores. I disabled one and it runs perfect now =D Thief Gold is still an issue though...

Edit - Nevermind, thought I'd fixed the problem but apparently it was a one off. I got the second mission to load once, now it's just crashing again.

Send Bikerdude an e mail...he has all three D-Core hot fixes(just tweaked exe files similar to a crack) and may send them to you. I had similar problems and after I applied what he sent me the problem was gone. I didn't have to mess with the afinity anymore. Once you put the hotfixes in your Thief/Main directory create a shortcut to it and don't start the game with Darkloader or it will try to start the game with the old exe. You will have to get rid of the old exe and rename the D-core exe the same as the origional if you want to start with Darkloader. I could even send them to you if you send me your e mail addy.
You just started playing Thief ? Did you know that there is over 600 single player custom made missions..some of them full campaigns. Many way better then the origional T1 and 2 games. Look at the Thief Fan Missions Thread.
I just noticed you are a new member so you probably have no idea who bikerdude is..Just send me your E mail and I will send them to you zipped. They weigh in at about 3MB. There is one for T1, T gold and T2. If you have broadband you should be able to download through your E amil fairly quickly.

Sure, my e-mail is ------------. Could always try an upload site if'n you want.
Yeah I'm new here, but I'm not new to Thief. Thief 1, I originally just played the training and first level, but my computer crashed. Just recently tried reinstalling. I've beaten #2 once and #3 a couple times. I tried a few fan missions for T2 and was blown away, needless to say. I'm sure these babies will keep me busy =D
Appreciate the help. So this exe is for both T1/Gold AND T2? Weird =o T2 works, but I need to tweak affinities all the time (argh). Maybe this'll help me dodge that bullet.

Can you download files from a yahoo account..I will try now. It is now 5:30 Eastern Pacific time NY State. Let me know how you make out.
There is one for Thief 1
Thief Gold if you have it (Thief gold is basicaly thief 1 with 4 new levels)
Thief 2
Like I said earlier Just replace your old exe with the new one and if you want to start your game with darkloader when playing a fan mission you will need to rename the Duelcorethief exe the same as the origional.

First off, I greatly appreciate the help.
Secondly, the solutions didn't work... =( Thief 2's file makes the game crash before it can even boot up. Thankfully, T2 works fine on its own. I just need to remember to change the affinity stuff every time.
Thief Gold? Well it starts up, but it crashes just the same as always =( Seems my Gold issue is rather unique. Dammit D:

If you use the Thief 2 2Xcore exe you won't have to mess with the afinity every time...Just make sure you re create a shortcut to that exe . One last thing. Do you use a G-force card ? I know some of them couldnt run Thief if you are using XXX.XXX.9000 and above drivers. Go back to xxx.xxx.7xxx or
8xxx drivers and things are OK. So the newer drivers are a bad thing in some cases. Is it patched ? Have you tried a re-install?
There has to be a way to make it work. Hmm..well 99% of the fan missions use thief two anyhow so all is not lost. I tried to help.
You should definately remove your E mail from the thread now that I already got it or you'll get spamed to death....
Gechmir on 27/12/2007 at 15:21
Ahaha. That address already gets a lot of spam anyhow ='D
Yeah, I noticed that they disabled the affinity thing on their own, but the T2 one would crash before doing anything. Hit enter and bam, error report.
Downgrading the drivers would be too odd. I have a gaming notebook, and these are, like, Nvidia GeForce GO 7950 or something like that. The drivers are very unique and bizarre, from what I've seen. Downgrading them probably isn't an option ;(

I got the fixed .EXE
Fixed exe? what is that for? please be specific.
Also, a bit of advice - please don't take this as offensive or anything, just trying to help ya. Anyways, try not to post a new thread unless you're pretty sure that the question hasn't been fixed/addressed before. I think you're fine here, but I'm just saying, for future posts you make. This goes for any forum section. Also, make sure you read any "important" threads that may help you, i.e. the one I linked you to above.
Good luck with the problem.:thumb: Don't forget, you might be able to try the Compatibility option in Windows XP. I believe that is stated above in the FAQ page I sent you to.

The fixed .EXE is listed on the FAQ. I've already used it. The FAQ was the first place I looked once I got stumped, and nothing there helped, so I made this thread hoping for more directed advice. I tried the compatibility-swap for 95 & 98, but neither worked properly.

This was the .EXE I referred to. Because, well, that's what it *is* =o
