I have to say that I have already played and finished the game on a worse machine: Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz - 768 Mb ram - Sapphire 9800Pro AGP. No bad problems, of course at medium/low settings.
Now I wanted to replay it on this comp: Pentium 4 3Ghz - 2Gigs of RAM - Sapphire x1650Pro AGP. No way! I keep on having shuttering, lags, whatever you call that malfuncion that makes you walk at 1/10 fps.
I tried everything. I formatted the HD, I reinstalled the game 3 times, even in a different partition than C. I installed the patch 10005, then the 10004, then the 1005 again. I also changed the video drivers with a "hotfix" version.
I lovered the settings, the dinamic lights, the settings again, just to realize that even with the very minimum settings is just the same, if not worse!
Some time ago, the power supply of this pc just fried! (smoke came out of the computer!) So I thought that maybe some component was damaged.
I tested the memory, I also made a video test, it's all ok!
I also thought that the new power supply wasn't powerful enough for the video card, so yesterday I opened the case and looked into.
It's a Tecnoware 550W - +12V - 24A (I've heard that this is important, but it seems ok)
The last suspicious component is the motherboard, ASRock P4i65G. It has an integrated video chip Intel865G. Of course it should be disabled, but maybe there is a malfunction?
I have to say that apart fom the lag/shuttering there are no other visible flaws.
Other games i.e. Painkiller run ok even at 1680x1050, but another game: Terrorist Takedown 2 (which has very low system requirements) has the same problems of STALKER and its almost unplayable. It uses the same engine as STALKER...
Is there any test that I can do? Any idea of what can be the reason of the lag? Am I without hope of being able to play STALKER again?

There is your problem, play it on your hubbies computer when you get it.

I guess she(?) want to know why a 9800 seems to be faster than an x1650, even though they're both pretty old.
That is a little weird. Some architecture quirk that Stalker doesn't support perhaps?
I can't help there. I do know that Terrorist Takedown 2 doesn't use the same engine as Stalker; the former is Lithtech, the latter X-Ray.

Actually Terrorist Takedown 2 uses the LithTech JupiterEx, the FEAR engine. It's basically a glorified FEAR 1 mod.

Yes, that's what I don't understand....I would be happy to play the blasted game even with no dinamic lights at all, just like I played with the other pc.
And....of course you are right about Terrorist Takedown 2's engine I had forgot it. :) I even installed FEAR again, just to see how it goes. Well it's a lttle laggy, but playable. I remember to have played it better than that, when I had a nvidia 6800GT (which fried as well) on the same pc. Was the 6800GT better than this x1650 Pro? I can't believe it!

The X1650pro is a good litle card, far better than the 6800GT. But it will struggle with some modern games.
