problem with history books... - by steppin' razor

I'm doing the quest for Jim Stacey where you have to steal the history books for the mages guild person in Ald'ruhn. Way back when I first started the game, I was exploring in Caldera and stole those very same history books and sold them to someone, I have no idea who. I went to a local pawnbroker in Caldera and he had all 4 volumes, so I assumed those were them and bought them back and gave them to the mage person, and reported back to Stacey. but Stacey says I have to actually steal them from the guy in Caldera, that just any copies of the books aren't good enough. Either those weren't the right books, or it doesnt' work if i've sold them. Is there anything I can do, short of searching every merchant who buys books for all 4 volumes, and hoping I find them sometime before I turn 70? I'm on PC, so I can use the console (I actually tried that once already, but it didn't work...)
Thanks in advance,

Well his books are called "Odral's History of the Empire" rather than "Brief History of the Empire" so they can be told apart.
player->additem bk_BriefHistoryEmpire1_oh 1
player->additem bk_BriefHistoryEmpire2_oh 1
player->additem bk_BriefHistoryEmpire3_oh 1
player->additem bk_BriefHistoryEmpire4_oh 1
I'm still having problems. When I go into the console and type in the command, it says:
'Script SysWindow CompileAndRun Item bk_BriefHistoryEmpire1_oh was not found on line 1. Compiled script not saved!'
I have no idea what this means. This is the first time I've ever used the console, so I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. can someone give me step by step instructions on exactly what to do?
Thanks much,

1 go to 3d person view. (outside view...)
2 press the ~ key.
3 use the mouse cursor to select your player.
4 type, "additem bk_BriefHistoryEmpire1_oh 1" with out quotation!
5 press enter
6 repeat (with the other books) steps 4, 5, and 6.
hope that helps :thumb:

if this doesn't work, you may have some mods that get rid of these books!

ok, thanks, i'll give that a go. i don't have any mods, except the official patch, dunno if that's considered a mod or not, so it's not that. i think it's 'cause i didn't select my character, and i might have had quotes in there too...
thanks again,

To add things to your character without clicking on them first, use the Player-> prefix.
I.E. Player->AddItem, bk_BriefHistoryEmpire1_oh, 1

ok, i got it to work. i think the problem was that i didn't realized the items got added to your inventory, i just assumed the spawned either at your feet or in the place where they are originally found (ahem. don't i feel foolish...) thinking about this, the latter makes no sense, since things that are found many places would have a hard time choosing where to appear....
anyway, it worked. thanks again,
