I have been thru this game probably 6 or 7 times now, and I have never had this problem before.
In the tutorial level where you have to double click on the rope in your inventory to enable the lift, when I double click on the rope the game exits to the windows desktop.
I am using windows XP and I just installed the patch 1.06a, anyone else had this problem?

The latest patch is actually 1.16a. I presume that this was what you meant and not 1.06a.
In any case, you will probably have to revert to an earlier save if you have one.
