Hey there Turtles,
This is a most common issue. I was able to find an old topic for you ((
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117769)) in which I described a few solutions for this kind of issues, hope to be of use. But I’m almost certain the problem is coming either from your video or that you missed to install some of the fixes. Even though the game should run on newer NVIDIA drivers try reverting to older drivers. And don’t worry. I have a similar system to yours (same video) and I run the game fine. The solution will come up soon:)

I followed the instructions given in the link and I now get another error window :(

Any ideas?

If you followed the instructions you should have installed the NVIDIA driver fix. After you apply it you’re required to start the game from the thieffixed.exe. Try renaming thieffixed.exe to thief.exe (back up the original exe).

Yes, I've done that. Installed the driver fix, renamed the file, backed up the original .exe but still getting the same error message.

All right, I’ll Install Thief 1 later and I’ll see my progress if I can come up with anything.

Dear Turtles,
I'm sorry for the delay, but I had problems locating my old Thief Dark Project CD. However I threw a lot of effort into this, tried it on TDP, TG and T2, on both XP and Vista, and I think I have a solution for you! But instead of writing the solution I’ve decided to write the whole process for The Dark Project just in case. After each step of the installation I’ve written what error prevents me from playing Thief.
NOTE: my system is Athlon 64 Dual-core, 2GB of ram, NVIDIA 8800 GTS, the following is applied on Windows XP SP2
1. I install the game normally and I do not apply the 1.33 patch yet.
2. I run the game from Thief.exe – as soon as the Training starts I get a black screen and then it shows me the “Direct 3D device texture memory error” – I apply the direct 3D fix from (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/patches/) (the one for 1.14)
3. I run the game from thieffixed.exe – I get the Missing CD error
4. I back up the original thief.exe and rename thieffixed.exe to thief.exe – It still shows the Missing CD error
5. I read around the forums a bit and discover that when you change thieffixed.exe to thief.exe the game’s copy protection still recognizes it as a foreign file. This does not seem to happen to me with Thief G or Thief 2 Most people recommend using a Crack – I found one in (
http://m0001.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_thief.shtml).
6. I downloaded a crack: thiefcrk.exe, because it does not replace your original thief.exe. This is important because your thief.exe is currently the direct 3D fix and needs to stay that way. Instead this just removes the copy protection from that exe – I apply it and start the game. The Training starts normally but now it freezes after a minute. Time for the multi-core fix!
7. I apply the Multi-core fix from (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/hyperthreading/) - the game still freezes
8. I downloaded imagecfg, edited the bat file, but I forgot to actually run the bat file during gameplay – I’m an idiot, the game runs fine now :D :joke:
9. ALL RIGHT! The game is playable! Now let’s try and patch it to 1.33 – I download the update from (
http://thief-thecircle.com/download.asp?fid=264).
10. I apply the update. Then I download the NVIDIA fix for version 1.33 and run the game from the new thieffixed.exe – it doesn’t show the Missing CD error anymore and the game runs under version 1.33
Or instead of following my solution you can try and update directly to version 1.33. I really hope this proves helpful to you and to others. Then again this worked for me (solutions can vary between systems) and if you still have problems just write back.

The Thief Double Pack is pre-patched (it is already 1.33). Don't waste time patching. The best way to get rid of the missing cd warning is to remove the line "cd_path" from the install.cfg file in the root directory of where you installed thief. Then use the fixes/faq to solve dual-core issuses, etc...
