To me the outer door isn't frobbable, but if I get nearby and press 'F' the door opens.
By the way, you get Borov's key when you search his body.

I've remapped my keys and forgot what 'F' was by default. Is that the frob/use key?
D'Arcy on 26/6/2007 at 00:35
Yes, that's the 'Use' key.

Well this sucks. I restored a game prior to killing Borov, went directly to the lab door without killing Borov and tried using it, got "the door is locked." Tried knifing it, could not get it open in any way. This might seem normal, but it means that I must have had the key and opened the door with "use" the first time I played this section, yet for some reason it didn't check off the objective to find the lab entrance. No telling if it will happen again, so I guess I'm done playing for a while.

I didn't find any solution for this on forums, just people with the same problem but no solution. I just retraced my steps and it worked this time. I made sure not to exit the area between getting the key from Borov and opening the door to X18.
One thing I noticed this time was that there's a specific waypoint for "Get out of the bandit's base" after getting the key. I didn't notice that before and I just left the bandit base some other way without hitting that specific waypoint. It still checked off the objective and went on to find the lab door, but maybe that had something to do with screwing up the lab door objective.

All I did was entering the bandit base, kill Borov and grab the key, then free the imprisoned Duty member. Then I just left the base and headed for the lab.

I think I did this twice to get the prisoner to follow me out.

He isn't supposed to follow you. All you have to do is open the cell door, and the mission is accomplished. Then he goes out on his own.

This quest is borked in so many ways. In all recent playthroughs it marked itself as finished as soon as i approached the bandit place because the prisoner spawned wrong. One time he stood outside the cell. Another time he spawned outside in front of the cellar windows then ran inside the complex (to get into his cozy cell i guess) happily ignoring all the bandits showering him with bullets. The resulting distraction actually managed to save that one guy who gets usually shot up near the hole in the courtyard so as soon as one prisoner ran in another ran out. Definitely one of my top lawlz Stalker moments.

Usually that guy outside actually manages to run away. Mostly because the bandits are paying more attention to me. One of these days I should try following him, to see where does he go to after escaping. I'm guessing that he should go to the Garbage control post, although once I did saw him running aimlessly through the fields in the back of the factory.
