I really don't want to do a fresh install of XP. I know that up-dating from one system to another will read all the installed apps and link them into the new system.
I can recall just reinstalling W98SE right over an old one and keeping the applications.
I can't seem to figure out how to use the "REPAIR" function in XP, I get to the "recovery" console and thing seem to go to hell.
So...
Can I just install XP over the existing one or no. I suspect Not.
How do I access and use the REPAIR function without being forced into a re-install, which seems to be what happens.

Are you just trying to avoid the activation thing?
Are you trying to avoid finding all the drivers again?
Are you trying to save your music and files?
What's happening that you need to repair or reinstall? I can help you a lot, as this has been my main side gig for awhile now, repairing people's bad XP installs.
PM me if you need some "work-arounds" for Microshaft bad ideas in their OS.
