Well then, carry on and enjoy your self-inflicted console bugs!

Haha. I had forgotten about the batteries bug ok! By the time I noticed I was already like 3 hours in. Not gonna start over on PC just for that.

Haha I’m the opposite, I’d like to try Prey but definitely not on my PS4 because playing FPS games with a controller is an exercise in frustration for me. I’ll be constantly struggling with the controls and hating the fact that I’m not playing nearly as well as I would be with a keyboard and mouse.

Thanks to this thread I'm going to give the game another chance. I hope this time I manage to get past the negative effect that FPS/RPG mechanical tropes had on my immersion the first time around. Collecting a bunch of shit to craft inventory and equipment upgrades at stations, injecting yourself with cyber-modules/plasmids/augmentations/neuromods to put points in a skill tree and unlock abilities, and playing hacking minigames were fine when the genre was in its infancy but today their mundanity and the fact we have accepted them just tends to kill my excitement. On the other hand, the concept behind the mimics is very strong and the narrative is engaging, especially with the promise of an entire station to explore, so if I silence my grumpy gamer voice I am hopeful I will enjoy it.

You know, that's how I felt when I was younger. But these days, being older and lazier, I love to recline on my bed or sofa and just hold a controller in hand. Playing FPSes is rougher with controller, but luckily by now we have figured out enough conventions to make it feasible (plus stuff like aim assist helps). Honestly, I'll take the hit in accuracy for the extra comfort of a controller.
Plus, in a way, it also makes FPSes feel fresh. I've been gaming with mouse and keyboard for a decade, so shooty shooty starts to blend together a bit. But with a controller, the experience feels a bit newer again.

That's the way I am these days. Most of my game time is spent playing my Switch. and I'll probably continue the trend when I finally get a Steam Deck. Playing some games while on the couch, TV on in the background...
...man, it's just great.

Oh, do please grace us with a
current, grown-up example of whatevever genre you think Prey is supposed to be.

Prey's crafting system is fun: you drop different-coloured cubes into a machine and it spits out other things! Your skill tree decisions have genuine consequences for how you can progress, with narrative implications, too. And the game works fine with a controller.

If I find one you can be sure I'll be the first to sing its praises on TTLG, ZB.

I don't like games being stuck with old RPG mechanics like dice rolls to determine combat outcomes, but that's not the case with Prey. And the skill tree works well. Lets you customize your playstyle and working towards a certain upgrade is often more engaging than the story itself. How else would you do a skilltree? Unlock abilites at certain story points? Naah. Just give the player every upgrade right from the start? It'd be overwhelming and the difficulty would need to be really high to compensate for the players vast abilities. The difficulty curve would just be a WALL right at the start of the game. Seriously, Bri, what are you envisioning as a better, modern version of a skilltree?
As for crafting, I can take it or leave it, but I'll second Aja in thinking that Prey's recycling and building machines are extremely charming. Every time the builder 3D prints a box of ammo that then turns into a physical object and tumbles down a lil slide into the collection-slot I clap my hands and giggle like a schoolgirl.
