I have played the game a few times over and my initial impression was that the guns you pick up are never modified. They're always at mod level 0 and it's up to you to choose one you really like and mod it yourself, then maintain it carefully.
Right now I'm playing an Impossible runthrough and I don't have much Cyber modules to spare to Maintain. So I'm literally picking up every single pistol and using it till it breaks before dropping it and moving on.
I found one pistol - I want to say it was on Engineering but it could have been on Med/Sci - which was "Shoddy" (maintenance level 3) or so when I got it.
When I fire with it, the crosshairs do not move at all. There is no kickback.
Of all my weapons I thought this was quite special and so I finally invested a few Cyber modules in Maintain, so I could keep this going.
Has anybody else noticed this? The weapon mod screen still says it's an unmodified weapon but there is literally no kickback at all when I fire it.

This isn't exactly a novelty. There are a few 'special' weapons, either with no recoil, or which are unbreakable.

News to me. I never bothered to pick up the low-quality weapons because I always had the Maintenance skill on hand and could keep the ones I already had in working order. So I never knew there were special weapons. Could there be a list or map somewhere detailing the locations of these?

Cool, thanks for letting us know about the unique weapons.
Were they glitches or intentional by the developers? Does ADaoB 'fix' them?

I've always seen these special guns as glitches that somehow managed to slip past the devs before release.

Wow, I've never known about these yet I'm pretty sure I've experienced them on various playthroughs.
Creating a mod which indicates them would be pretty handy.

It looks like they changed which property was dealing with gun degradation part way through making SS2, and then didn't change all the weapons. They have an extra property on the concrete weapon which makes them unbreakable or have no recoil.
Of course someone might have done it for kicks.

Another fun thing is the weapons that start off pre-modified. They are labelled as modification level 1 (or 2), yet have all the normal stats of an unmodified weapon. Oh, and any subsequent modifications will not give the bonuses that the gun missed by not going through the given modification levels.
I know that SecMod fixed this by making the pre-modified guns have correct stats; I don't know if ADaOB did the same.
