Doesn any one know what PPPoA does on a ADSL line, and which machine creates the signal, is it created by my modem, the DSLAM/ATM in the switch, or the ISP.
I've looked on the internet but all the explanations seam to wander around without exactly explaning it. I only want to know because the PPPoA on my line goes off, and I need to know if the problems at my end, the DSLAM/ATM although BT use ATM not DSLAM, or at my internet service provider.

It stands for "Point-to-Point Protocol Over ATM" and its a protocol that used by the ADSl modem/router to connect to the ISP, All Uk ISP's use it.
Regarding your connection dropping, that could be for a number of reasons. But your looking in the wrong area. its possibly either the phone line, the modem itself or the isp.
try hard resetting the modem and see how you go, then get the line tested and then finally call your isp.

Just to expand on that a bit:
If you lose PPP it means the session with your ISP has been terminated and you can no longer access the Internet. If you are still synced it's likely that the problem is either between the exchange and the ISP server, or that the ISP server is down.
But if you lose sync you are no longer connected to your exchange. The problem will be your equipment, or the line between you and the exchange, or equipment in the exchange. (Obviously you will lose PPP as well.)

I've checked it with two adsl modems and they both reported that pppoa was off, I checked my isp via dialup, when adsl was off and their server was up and running on there status page. I've contacted BT about this and asked them to check the ATM in the switch, and the reply was that they only check the ATM if the request comes from the ISP and not me, BT checked my line but found no problems, I contacted my ISP and they said theres no problems on there lines to the ATM in the switch, which basically means the ATM is faulty as thats at the center. But I don't seam to be able to get BT or my ISP to have the ATM checked for a fault, or a faulty connection, as they say these machines dont go wrong.
All I want to know is does the ATM machine send me the PPPoA signal, I know its not generated at my end, or does the ISP generated the PPPoA signal and it just goes through the ATM. The DSL signal is on just the coded part PPPoA isn't there, so I cant connect.
The most dubious part about this is that it goes off for exactly 1 hour, or 2 1/2 hours, or 14 hours, like someones turning the signal off via some sort of timer.
With dsl connected and no pppoa I did a end to head loopback signal check, and the report was no errors.
