Because I'm tired of being bound to this desk, with my uncomfortable chair, giant ugly CRT moniter, noisy case fans, huge tower, etc. I want something I can sit on the couch with, and then bring to school, to take notes and write down any other musings that come to me. I've taken to carrying a notebook around, but all that's emerged is a deeper dislike for manual penmanship.
From a pure price point, a desktop would make more sense. Yes, I could get a massive desktop gaming rig for the same price, but I'd hate myself for spending that much to play games that don't interest me. The laptop I'm ordering will have more than enough power to run anything up to and including Stalker on high settings (and it's the only game I kinda want to play anyway), with the processing capability to handle any audio creation/recording tasks I can throw at it. Pretty hard to make field recordings from your bedroom. And it's gotta work with the band; I need it for synth and sampling duty.
All in a sexy slim case that's fun to be with, wherever I might decide to go.

The biggest point is that a weedy 230W PSU aint never gonna power aja's configuration.
I believe you're right here. When calculating what my computer would need, the 230 W PSU was just enough (assuming the PSU would have an efficiency of about 85-90% at least), and with Aja's Radeon 9800, it would be more than this thing could handle.

But you also need to know that a significant amount of PSU's out there are only making max efficiency at 50% rather than 100%.
You mean they have max efficiency at 50% load? Oh sh*t, I didn't know the situation was
that bad nowadays... :nono:
Anyway, I just now realized that I was looking at this from a very different point of view. I already had a number of PSUs with labels on them describing how much amperes the different lines would allow. It wasn't difficult to find out whether that was enough to power the hardware I planned to use. And if that 230 W PSU would not have done the trick, a 400 W one lying around here certainly would. I didn't want to use it because its single fan made enough noise to compete with a vacuum cleaner.
Aja, however, needs a new PSU and cannot experiment with several ones (could be a bit expensive), so being on the safe side (as he said in the meantime) would not hurt. I just thought PSUs were better today, but if their efficiencies are so unpredictable, the safe side is not where I thought it was.

Before buying anything, its best to look up as many reviews as you can find to get an over all picture, which is why a big chunk of psu's ive found making (max)80% efficiency at 50% load. But that said some make max out at 50% and 100% which is odd to say the least.
moral of the story -
do your research...!!!

seems to be working nicely :D
the old computer's getting stripped for parts, and the good stuff is going in the closet for now.
