Power save settings . . . - by nickie

in Windows. Well there you go Biker - no, I haven't. I shall now google what you're talking about and get back to you.
OK - Think this is what you mean.
Power Schemes - Always On
Turn off monitor and turn off hard disks - Never
System Standby and System hibernates - Never
Power Saving settings - Options - unticked
Power button - Shut down
Sleep button - Standby
Hibernate - enabled
UPS
Status - blanked out
Details - Manufacturer - None
UPS service is currently stopped.
This started a couple of weeks ago. I got up from my desk and it cut off so checked to make sure cables were properly attached. Did it a couple of times. Has been fine for days but this morning happened 3 times in quick succession. I put a different monitor and cables on but it happened again 4 or 5 times. Much swearing later and having done nothing to it, it's stayed on for about 2 hours with no problem.
When it cuts off and you take the monitor to pc cable from the back and plug it in again, it reboots the computer. Other than that, there's no pc sound of anything happening when it cuts out.
So far have changed cables, run a scan and currently doing a memtest - things suggested by odd bod. Checkdisk shows nothing either.
Memtest fine and the monitor has stayed for 7 hours now. So I'll not ask for any help now unless it starts playing up again.

Its possible the gfx card driver is corrupt...
uninstall then reinstall the gfx driver.
if that still dont fix it, have you got another video card you pop in there to see if it still does it...

You have a very annoying habit of showing up my total ignorance about certain things. :laff: :laff:
I will investigate and return in due course. I've just put my LCD monitor back on again as I couldn't get any sound working on the CRT one. But so far, it's still there. However, I don't trust it so I will check out the driver thingy.
gfx is short for graphics? :o
You're talking about my manky Radeon 9200 card. Is that right?
theBlackman on 4/10/2008 at 08:49
Right. Grafix (graphics), GFX Graphics effects, et al.

Thank you for continuing my education guys!
Well they don't seem to want to uninstall. I have 2, more or less the same, listed and as I don't know which one it is, I've tried to uninstall both. Separately and one at a time. The first one I uninstall, when I reboot I get nasty big icons. The 2nd one on reboot, my screen is as per normal. The Add/Remove Programmes entry for ATI driver was empty but I removed it anyway. I'm not getting a 'Found New Hardware' message. And Thief is playing normally. If I try Add Hardware wizard, I just get a 'working normally' message.
And is there a free driver cleaner, do you know, that doesn't require bit torrent to be installed.
Yesterday it behaved fine, this morning, it's clicked itself off once.

Looks like your system reinstalled the drivers by its lonesome. You'll need to uninstall your drivers again. When you get those big nasty icons, it means you've uninstalled 'em properly - Windows can't set high resolution modes without the drivers.
Uninstall the drivers again and try either (
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745) Driver Cleaner Pro or (
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1655) Driver Sweeper.
After uninstalling, reboot your PC, start in safe mode, and set either driver cleaner to work. Reboot again, and reinstall your graphics card drivers.

Thank you Sulphur - for the link and such nice clear instructions. I'll be able to follow those OK I'm sure. :)
Well I managed that alright but I'm now getting the following message in Device Manager.
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
I've googled Code 19 but don't feel comfortable with some answers and don't know what I'm doing. Please, please don't laugh but where is the Check Registry button kindly recommended by Microsoft? I tried running Scanreg.exe also recommended but I don't seem to have one of those.

Hi Nickie
That error is would indicate that the gfx driver didnt install correctly, so...
1. download ATi catalyst 7.7 (as I believe this is the best driver version for the radeon 9000 card u have)
2. un-install the ati driver you have just installed.
3. then run Driver cleaner pro that you have already downloaded and install and then select "ATI" and "ATI CCC" from the drop down list.
4. reboot, when windows starts back up and tries to detect the new hardware found (gfx card) keep pressing cancel.
5. install the ATi catalyst 7.7 driver, then reboot.
6. come back here with the results.

OK - I'll give it a go Biker - if I can get the darn thing to stay on long enough. I'm now on a different pc. It's a 9200 card, would the 7.7 still be right for that?
Windows isnt' telling me it's trying to detect anything.
