This question is for those who have graduated from a college/vocational school (2, 4, 6, 8, or more years). After graduating from college/vocational school what is your employment status?

I was actually working in my field before I graduated, which was a mixed blessing. Yes, I was in my field, but since I was still in school as I went at first, they never took me seriously. I was making enough money to keep me from leaving and starting at the bottom somewhere else, but after a few years I realized that I had been pidgeon holed where I was and I wouldn't be allowed to advance.
I've since gotten enough job experience to move into a position elsewhere that I can turn into a career, but that was sure a frustrating couple of years.

At my university there is a huge co-op program. Usually if you interned with these companies, you get an offer before you even graduate and pay is usually higher than others with the same degree because you already have experience with them.

In my postgrad course you have to have a firm to sponsor you when you begin it, so that very very often segues into a full-time position with them afterwards.

This really depends on what degree you are doing. If it's a "professional" degree then it's highly likely you'll just slide into a job (though some people realise that it's not for them before this happens). If you do something with no obvious real world application then unless you can get onto a graduate management program or somesuch then alot of it is just down to you.
A few of my friends work for companies/businesses that are totally unrelated to their degree just because they put themselves out there. Sports science degree -> advertising. Pharmacology degree -> IT support/management, etc.

Finished my vanilla maths/stats degree, tried a PhD then fucked that off, did some grunt statsman work in Oxford for a year then fucked that off, did a new and improved flavour of statistics for a masters degree with a honey-mustard consultancy dressing, moved to australia, considered my options, took the easy (and only, at the time) choice and did a master-of-all-trades insurance-analytics role which combined a little bit of everything... still deciding what I want to do with my life.

Post on the Internet, apparently :D
Took me a good four to five months to find a job in a field related to my degree, and another four years to find a decent one after having the benefit of experience to add to my resume/CV.
Edit: Four Frickin' Years

I walked straight out of my media studies & journ degree into a job at a production house.
I had interned there after my third year with every intention of returning to Uni for my 4th and final year. The company I was interning with begged me to stay and threw money at me, so I took a BA and a job instead of a Bjourn and uncertainty.

I went to grad school to get my Master's, but instead of graduating (
http://www.studiocypher.com/) I started a company with a few other students who also haven't graduated yet.
But considering that I love what I do, I'm not too sore about not graduating.

This poll is utterly worthless in its assumption that post-college life is either working in one's field or serving up fast food.
I graduated with an English Degree, haven't directly used it since. I currently spend my evenings writing while earning my keep by day as a Quality Assurance Engineer. I play with multi-million dollar radiation systems used to treat cancer and I love it.
Tonamel: so is that paying the bills, then?
