Congratulations on completely missing the point.
I just remembered the short sword discussion where you made some completely incoherent statement and dismissed my criticism with an unjustified comment just as this one. So, here's the Sesame Street version: ....aaaaand Springheel ninja'd me.
For the record, jay pettitt, image-google for "pattens". Clogs probably evolved from them (the earliest image I know stems from the later 15th century IIRC). Pattens allowed you to cross muddy ground BUT you were able to put them away if necessary. To sustain the it's-fantasy argument you'd have to assume that someone here wasn't introducing the realism thingy. This time it wasn't even me.

And again, at the end of the day, it all falls under the umbrella of suspension of disbelief circa 1998.

Here's more positive news. EM does seem to be reacting to feedback...apparently "swoop" has been moved to its own button, leaving only jump/climbing (is that the same as mantle?) on the same button.
Hooray for SubJeff - sounds like they were actually listening to some of his comments and opinions (among others). This should be a lesson to all the naysayers who bitch about people "complaining" in this (and other) forums. If you don't speak up, nothing will change.
The rest of the Q&A didn't really alleviate any other fears or issues though - they say you can jump where you want, but only if there's an "edge" in range. I'm guessing that excludes jumping from carpet to carpet, or over glass or dogs or anything else like that which isn't actual geometry - but we'll see.

That's a nice surprise, Springheel.
Also nice to get confirmation that the contextual stuff is all driven by geometry. I was pretty confident that would be the case, but iirc this is the first time that EM has come out and and explicitly confirmed it.
So now I wonder what happens if you press jump with nowhere to jump to? Do you just do a normal jump now? What difference is there between a normal jump and a contextual jump? Is it just normal jumping plus contextual climbing now?
EDIT:

They didn't actually say that, though I have to admit it's still not at all clear how it works. But what you are suggesting would imply that the jump button has no effect when pressed in the middle of some flat room, which from a UI pov, seems a bit wierd. I'd be a little surprised if that's how the game works.

Me too, but they aren't denying that the jumping is contextual, so I think that's what we're going to get.
Chade on 4/9/2013 at 21:56
I'm guessing that now it's going to be a bit more like AC, where you can jump whenever you want to, but the game will "help" you if it thinks you're trying to jump onto anything in particular. But I could easily be wrong. We'll see.

Seems I was correct about the contextual jumping being environment and not hotspot based.
The most encouraging thing in that was the bit about lots of rope arrow hotspots.

Well I don't know how much my specific opinion contributed to this change; I may have started that thread but we had a lot of discussion in there. And a couple of nuts too.
If something is silly we should point it out, explain our POV, discuss it rationally and logically. That's a far cry from the complaining and frothing that often comes out.

Which they only did in order to avoid any potential movement selection errors...The contextualization is still the same, and so this means very little.

Yes...Without rational, intelligent feedback, whether that be negative or positive, there can't be any purposeful alterations or refinement.

Which doesn't provide any real difference in actual gameplay, because the designed geometrical constructs are essentially a form of a contextual hotspot. Keep in mind, the game determines for the player whether they can do something, based on its own rules of contextual geometry.
Free, non-contextualized movement, is still being subjugated.

There's no free-form jumping, only contextual jumping...nothing essential has changed.
