Really, unless you're talking about some of the more localized dialects, the gulf between normal usage American english and English...er...english isn't that vast. Probably only slightly bigger than northern and southern US dialects with a few extra words thrown in or taken out for flavor. In fact, I don't think I've ever had a conversation with any fresh-off-the-boat English person that left me scratching my head at any point. Usually you're just switching one similar word for another.
Aussies, on the other hand...arvo dag fair dinkum bottlo bikkie ridsies WHAT?
And lastly, up until this thread, I always had a vague notion that porridge was somewhat akin to an unsweetened custard. Hence the reason why I thought it was a bit like cream of wheat.

Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold,
Pease porridge in the pot, nine days old;
Some like it hot, some like it cold,
Some like it in the pot, nine days old

Yeah pease porridge is something else entirely and if you're eating it for breakfast there is something wrong with you. It goes in sandwiches and such, being a savoury thing. Have you ever had any?

Yikes, blast from the past. I haven't had any porridge for a while, but I still seem to be on the golden syrup more than anything else.
