FFS this is akin to drunk driving and then complain that you got arrested.
If you want to protest you do not use a national symbol.

Because someone might call the emergency services if they see an upside down US flag.
Maybe if normal people paid any attention to the flag code they might.

Then too we all knew that putting Bush on a flag would be considerdered desecration didn't we? Now we have it in writing.
Personally I prefer a country whose principles are stronger than it's symbols.

Doesn't drunk driving harm other people though? I don't see how flying a flag harms anyone.

True story: i have a buddy of mine whose roommate was shot multiple times and killed by a police officer while he was unarmed and drunk. i am not lying. My friend had to move far away (i.e. to the other side of the globe) to emotionally deal with this problem.
They were partying one night in their apartment, neighbor calls the cops, cop comes over. At this point, pool furniture had been tossed around, etc... they were having a grand time while drunk. So, this cop, who is a little tiny guy in stature, has them start cleaning it up. The guy who was killed was unarmed, but he was a very large, muscley type dude.
Anyways, words are exchanged between the cop and the guy who was killed, and the guy gets shot multiple times to death.
The cop claims he was attacked - yet the guy who got killed had no weapon. The other side of the story claims that the guy who was killed had no shirt on at the time and local rumors claim the cop was homosexual with some severe emotional/mental issues. Words get exchanged, the guy who was killed made some shitty remarks at the cop about being gay or the like, and BLAM BLAM BLAM. Who knows what really happened except that a small police office shot a large unarmed man multiple times to death.
i don't draw the point out about the shitty homosexual comments to make a comment on homosexuality or anything like that... i would never support making shitty comments about homosexual folks and definitely think that part was completely wrong on the part of the guy who was killed - i'm just showing how giving every cop a gun isn't a great idea if they can't handle stress.

Free speech is
not absolute. Flying the flag upside down (when there is no emergency) is the same as yelling out "FIRE! HELP!" in a theater or restaurant if there is no fire. You can't do it. That's known as disturbing the peace, which
is a crime.
You're an idiot for believing this. The US flag code is not a law that has any penalty for failure to comply. Furthermore, "The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property." hardly applies to a residential setting where phone lines are every 30 feet. It is used for lifeboat and aircraft wreck signalling.

I'm pretty sure that it was clear that in this case flying the flag upside down, with dubya's face on top of it was not an attempt to disturb the peace by tricking people into thinking they are in a state of emergency (surely goverments would never stoop to such tactics to keep people in line would they?) but rather a protest against the current ruling goverment. I would have considered this right to protest against those in charge a key distinction between a democracy and a dictatorship.
