Just got an HP Ipaq 210 and I'm looking for GPS software that DOES NOT require a wifi connection. In otherwords...it can either cache and use a large amount of map data offline or it has preloaded maps. I have a gps cf card for the pda and naturally it also has wifi but who has wifi on the road? Unfortunately the 210 is a true pda and not a phone so I don't get internet through cell towers, making any gps software pretty useless unless you pull over and there's an internet cafe there when you do...lol.
Anybody know of a map/gps program for the mobile platform that supports large cache for maps or offline maps? I'm running Windows Mobile 6.0 Classic. Thanks.

TomTom is your friend here.

I've been looking as well. I have an HTC Touch Diamond, which is a phone, but I have no data connection so I'm essentially in the same boat. Only it's worse, because I have no card slot, so I can't use GPS software that requires its own map card.
The TomTom UK site shows Navigator 7 with downloadable maps coming soon (which is what I'd want), but the Canadian site only has Navigator 6 with SD card maps and is $350 CDN! Even Navigator 7 with SD card maps (which is already for sale on the UK site) is only 90 pounds ~= $160 CDN.
I found another piece of software who's name escapes me right now that would work, but it was around $200. That's still a bit more than I was willing to spend for a software-only solution when I already have the hardware.

I know cellular technology is pretty widespread nowadays but you'd think somebody would have thought to allow the user to cache an arbitrary amt of map data to storage if they wanted to. It just makes sense....if you ever remember the names of the programs you were referring to let me know. Thanks.

Thread bump to answer the original question:
I downloaded (
http://code.google.com/p/gpsvp/) GPSvp, and it works very well for me. It's free and can cache map data from a variety of sources (Google Maps, Live Maps, OpenStreetMaps). So you can browse around a bit when you have a WiFi connection and use that map data when travelling. It also supports Garmin map data. If you wanted, you can download OSM map data from (
http://www.openstreetmap.org) Open Street Map and convert it to Garmin data using (
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mkgmap) Mkgmap.
If you want to try other possibilities, OpenStreetMap has (
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WinPDA) other suggestions for Windows Mobile GPS applications.
And I can save myself about $150-350 :P
