Will the Pocket PC version of Ultima Underworld by <a href="http://www.ziosoft.com/">Ziosoft</a> have sound? I've never played around with a Pocket PC before to know whether or not they are capable of sounds beyond simple beeps and clicks. Does anyone here know?

My iPAQ is capable of playing MP3 via headphone jack or normal speaker (although the normal speaker is quite tiny and sounds not too good).
The build-in sound-hardware is quite limited due to size.
But it is possible, yes. I just find it unfortunately that there will be no linux version :(

<b>Tels</b>, have you ever managed to get UW1/2 to run with full sound on Linux yet (as in, on your PC)?

No. I have only UUW1 run under Windows. AFAIK, it doesn't run under Wine due to beeing a DOS game (but I'll try again).
I have no UUW2 (yet).
Cheers,

That is the UW1 demo, doesn't look to good.
Oh, and just to clarify, I meant I find it unfortunately, that there will be a PocketPC version, but none for Linux on the handheld. Of course, a desktop linuxversion should also be run (theoretically) on an IPAQ.

Someone managed to get the full version of UW to play on Linux. I ran a search on these forums but I couldn't seem to find the thread. From what I remember, he (I can't remember who it was) used a DOS emulator. I don't think that he managed to get sound to work though.

Do you mean that you have never played UW2? Overall, its my favourite game ever.
b.t.w. I have also purchased an original shrink wrapped box from Vern, which should be arriving shortly :). Although, I don't know if I've got the heart to open it...

Wine is the windows "emulator". I'am unsure whether there exists a DOS emulator or not. DOS programs *should* run under wine, but usually it is even harder to get them to run under wine than under windows.

I played both (multiple times), but I never owned one :-(

<aol>me too</aol>
I would like to buy UW1, too. Although it would probably not run, anymore. But the various recreation projects are fun and I hack at the UW adventures project a bit to get it to work under Linux (Heh! Michael! Watch <a href="http://uwadv.sourceforge.net">out</a>.

i think you guys were referring to my earlier post
i managed to get uw1 &2 running off a cd using a ramdisk
the os was dos622 & the cd is bootable
for linux using dosemu or wine here a few suggestions for tels to try out
go here ...(
http://www.sircabirus.com/ultimaunderworld/pages/)
& grab the patch. this fixes the exe & removes an instruction that would try to
turn on the scroll led or something
i think that error may be related to dma which dos proggys are frequently known for
so patch the exe & let us know if it worked....
cheers
