I believe it was increased while the server was down. The posts about it may be on the temporary forums.
As long as I've been using PMs it was set to 100, and that's from just before I started collaborating with others about the Names List.

Of course, being the odd ball. Most of my PMs are not worth saving. I have about 6 sent, that are formatted to answer questions, and one or two in the inbox.
Other than that 99% of all such, like my Email, are read, answer, discard.

Maybe to remind you that ttlg is not you mailbox service :p ? ... that sort of reminds me. Where i work, many people hold their important mail in trash folder ... a'la "Don't empty that! I have many important messages and contacts there!!!" ... i kid you not.
