Replaying yet again. This time trying it with some self-imposed inventory and skill training restrictions - (one rifle/heavy weapon, max 4 medkits, 6 grenades, etc. and skill upgrade only at a "base" ).
I've noticed this before but a search didn't bring up any prior discussion.
It's possible for JC to discover a connection between UNATCO and an obviously sinister MJ12 quite early in the game. First time in UNATCO HQ he can find an email from a "ws" to Manderley. Then in Hell's Kitchen he can visit the lab in the sewers and read another email from the same "ws" to jsteward. After listening to the bum in the clinic - "the vectors are all wrong..." - the connections between the Grey Death, MJ12, and UNATCO (at least Manderley) should be obvious and arouse at least some suspicion in JC. Yet JC and the game's plotline seem oblivious to all this evidence. Perhaps letting JC find the emails from "ws" to jsteward was a mistake. But, even without reading those emails the utter lack of official response to a previously unknown organization conducting lethal experiments in the sewers beneath NYC is disturbing. IMHO, having the MJ12 secret lab mission so early is a mistake - perhaps it would have been better placed between the warehouse mission and the airport.
p.s. To Po, if you're still reading here - sorry to read you're moving on to another game so soon. If you've only played it once you are undoubtedly missing quite a lot.

Frankly I think the intro reveals too much of the plot.

I have to agree with Agent Monkeysee. As neat as the intro is, it basically tells you the plans of the villians if not in exact detail, well enough so that you won't be surprised by anything they do.

The intro may be a tad too revealing [then again, who did NOT expect that regardless of it?], but it's just the best piece of dialogue ever recorded. *grin*
"Let it spill over...!"

^ Definately. "Or better than kings... GODS." :cheeky:
Yes, it does give too much away, but what the heck. After the second time through nobody cares anymore. ;)

Reconsidering it, Deus Ex didn't ever really try to present the conspiracies it featured as shocking revelations, but more like, "Oh! Look over here! Aliens! And if you look directly to your right, you can see FEMA seizing control of the government." Deus Ex was a game about conspiracies, but it showed a pretty externalized view of them, and didn't really seem to be trying to trick the player into believing there was nothing amiss about the game world's status quo. Given this, how much was revealed in the intro makes sense.
Besides, the intro's dialogue is painfully cool. ;)

Is there an MP3 of the full intro, music and voices? I so want that on my playlist... :cheeky:

Uh, pretty much what Monkeysee said.
I wish you could have the choice of
staying with UNATCO and working against the NSF, Illuminati, etc.
Would that have been difficult to pull off, or possibly result in a much less-rewarding game experience? Certainly. But there have been enough threads about Deus Ex vs. Thief in terms of individual choice, plot, etc ...
... I just wanted to join the bad guys! Bob Page seemed like a really cool guy to me! ;)

But if he was on the side of the hero, he wouldn't be a proper cartoony supervillian!

Perhaps I've played too many non-computer RPGs so I make the distinction without really thinking about it.
