We shouldn't have to rely on mod-makers. Deus Ex presented other plot choices, I'm just upset that they didn't allow for this. I'm more understanding of why you have to start out playing for UNATCO, because that's a character that already existed, and you are stepping into their shoes. A decision to switch sides represents a change in the character, and should be the result of the PLAYER in an rpg. Deus Ex is not a pure RPG and has less freedom than many (Darklands, Daggerfall, Fallout and Arcanum being examples of more free-form games), but it did allow more freedom than most games. I understand that it would have taken more work to add more freedom, but so does anything. I don't think it would have taken as much work to add the option to take Bob Page's offer at the end, since all they need to do is add a new ending, so I am dissapointed that we could not do that either when it is clearly presented as a possibility in the plot.
Your argument that I should just pretend strikes me as absurd. Should I pretend that I can join Helios? Should I pretend that I can save Smuggler or Paul? Should I pretend that I can play through without killing anyone? If I wanted to just pretend and not have any impact or choice I could have played Half Life.
Are you sure you have to send the signal? Someone else said it changes the dialogue if you don't.

IIRC, the dialogue that changes doesn't effect anything. If you find the evidence, then return to Paul, JC more or less says that he's not convinced of anything, Paul says that means they're parting ways, and that's that. There's absolutely nothing you can do after that, except send the signal.

It would be funny if you could rat Paul out, and then UNATCO imprisoned you just because you knew too much. Sure, no meaningful choice there other than allowing a teensy bit of role-playing, but it would've been better and made more sense than what they had.

That wouldn't be a bad mod. Just get some people who can voice act like one of the UNATCO troopers, JC, and Paul, then have it so you can go to a trooper and have the option of talking to him and telling him where Paul is. You go back to the apartment to hold Paul still while the place is raided, Paul realizes what's going on, and attacks JC when the MIB arrive. Make it so that Paul is mortal in UNATCO, you can talk to him, and depending on what you say, maybe Paul will attempt to kill you, or you can call a truce and offer to help him.
