I haven't played the PS2 port of Deus Ex, but if it's anything like the PC version it has those nice big maps even on hardware that has much less RAM. So I'm sure it can be done.
The areas in Deus Ex for the ps2 were really scaled down in size and broken up into multiple areas divided by loading zones. It was very much like what we have here with DX2's small maps.

On subject: Get the game, play it, make your own opinion. Then play it again. It's a good game. Not good by the standards that DX set (they pretty much cut loose with that game, and it was good) but excelent by whatever standard one might hold for single player versions of HL or MOH, which both bored me to tears after my first run through. Hell IW would actually make a fair MP game as well, but whatever chance of that is yet to be seen. Anyway, like I said, the single player for that is beyond most FPS that you will see and gameplay and story wise on par with the likes of MGS (not to say it has the same playing style as MGS but it does what it's meant to do almost as well as MGS does what it's meant to do, well okay, maybe not MGS but definately MGS2.)
On Map Size: Last I knew Splinter Cell and DXIW didn't run on the same engine. With the same physics, or number of polys per map. Splinter may be able to have a bigger map because the engine it runs is dated compared to DXIW (I can't bear to imagine what a body thrown onto a pile of barrels on a map the size of the DX1 liberty island.... too many collision multipliers, shear madness!) The fact that DX1 was originally intended just for pc is heavily evident in map size, and from the extensive reading I've done on the PS2 version of DX1 (my freind owns a PS2 and was considering getiing the game, at the time he had a dated pc so I was wondering what the differences would be on the PS2) the maps have been broken down to accomodate for the lower power of the PS2 compared to the PC of the time. As for other dev decisions, like supposedly "dumbing down" the game and making universal ammo and removing the lean functions and all other whatnot, I personally think that the majority of these have nothing to do with making the game for the X-box, I know it could be argued otherwise (that their aren't enough buttons for lean, that the interface would have been better if it were designed specifically for pc) but so what? It doesn't seriously detract from gameplay (granted I had my moments of anger at not being able to lean, and the time that I really would have liked to have drawn my sniper rifle instead of dropping it) and we can all pray for a good patch anyway (and hell, if enough people buy the game for pc and x-box sales suck, then maybe IS will make DX3 for pc only, and then we'll have no right to bitch about such things).

Do GeForce cards do better than ATIs in DXII?

Those screenshots look pretty nice. How does the game run in comparison?

I can't think of any slowdown at all on Splinter Cell, buttery smooth.
It's a good stealth game, much like hiding in the shadows of theif, but with a more modern set of tools. It's biggest downside is that it's very linear, you really aren't given too many options on how to handle a situation.
The night vision goggles are sweet too. Since it's Tom Clancy they keep it fairly true-to-life.
BTW - Finished the game today, did two endings while I was at it, then started a new game (which I may put away to play one of the other games I've set aside, don't want to burn out on it). Plan to go by EB and see how it was received there.

Well, here's my thruppence worth...
Both people are right - The X-box is perfectly capable of running very good games. Halo is a case in point (don't even TRY and argue that one...). However, the problems with IW on the PC CAN all be blamed on the dual development for the X-box and PC, not because of the lower tech specs of the box, but because Ion Storm ballsed it up.
I think maybe they fell victim to the PC view of consoles?
(They're all stupid! we'd better make the game stupider too!... Of course, that's not what everyone thinks. But quite a few do. Admit it.)
I think everyone would've been better off if Ion Storm had admitted that they just wanted to make an X-Box game, and that they quite liked money, yes, thanks for asking. Then maybe they could have concentrated on making a game of DX's quality and intelligence for the X-Box, and everyone would have loved them, and World Peace would have been acheived etc. And WS would have achieved his goal of making an excellent console game.
Then they could have taken the time to made a good job of the PC version, with all the money and popular support of a great game already behind them. Instead of this bastard halfling mutant thingy we've got now (Cigarrettes are not the same size as a flamethrower! Why does drinking not get you drunk? Is Alex some kind of weirdo? etc etc.)

Splinter Cell is actually the anti-DX:IW. As Phil says it is completely linear, but every aspect of the game is honed and tuned to perfection. Very few games have had me muttering "damn that's cool" quite as much - the spread jump things, the thermal sensors, the gadgets, rappelling, strangleholds/human shields/forced retinal scans... Bloody brilliant. Plus it has a light meter, and you can shoot out light sources - now there's an idea.
I probably killed less than 10 people throughout the game, so the stealth/non-lethal combat was well looked after too.

You could do that in Perfect Dark (released in 2000) for the Nintendo 64. ;)
Even better, you could shoot the weapons out of enemy hands or even steal it from them. :cheeky:

So yes.. I just beat DX:IW, and it was definitely worth the 40 hours download time..
er..
*cough*
I mean $50.
My final impressons were that those who want to hate it will hate it, and everyone else will love it. Especially those who loved the first game (so much stuff in IW that was in TC).
TC= The Conspiracy.
