Wide-gamut also fucks up games. So that's kind of a big deal.

Which you could probably correct for by goofing around with the ingame brightness and gamma settings. A bit of a pain in the ass, but...eh. You'll have a monitor that can display more colors than most of the old set.
Edit: I just thought of a good analogy for all this BS for the one or two people still interested.
It's like, back in the day, you whipped up a picture of Superman in Photoshop on your jankity old worn out CRT monitor. You really wanted his cape to be a nice, bold red, so you overcompensated on that color to get it looking good. Years later, you look at that old picture on a good 2007 era LCD monitor, and...HOLY FUCKING SHIT RED! Going from sRGB to wide gamut is sorta like that. But you can't compensate for it just by toning down the colors, because some more recent things have already been calibrated for it. Makes it hard to find a happy medium. You can't correct the old stuff without messing up the new.
The only thing you have to do to get an old game looking right with a wide gamut monitor is adjust the saturation a bit. You'll probably be playing your games fullscreen, and you won't be messing with your default desktop color settings. No harm done.

Just realized I'd never posted my final decision. Ended up grabbing a Dell 2001FP off eBay for $100. Not bad for a monitor that originally retailed for $1100! It may not be widescreen, but it's damn good, especially considering its age. IPS panel, so great color and viewing angles, smooth non-native scaling, and no visible ghosting. Thief and SS2 look great on it.
I'll probably pick up a 2490WUXi in a few years, when/if they're not still going for $800-$1000 used.

Wow, that's a pricey monitor. It's not particularly high res or anything. Why the high price?
ZylonBane on 19/7/2010 at 15:52
Because it's a NEC. With NEC you get what you pay for.
Also IPS panels in general are very expensive compared to TN panels. That's why TN's taken over, even though it's horrible.

Thought I'd tack onto the end of this thread rather than kick off another "recommend a monitor" one.
What do people think to the <a href="http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2311h.htm">Dell U2311H</a>? I'm after a good all-rounder - needs to be decent for gaming but will also be my primary device for watching movies in my (small) living room.
Was considering either that or the older 2209WA (which I recall received some positive remarks on this forum). Or any other suggestions would be considered. I don't want to spend much more than £250; the U2311H is about £265 which is acceptable but I'm guessing the decent 24 inchers will be out of range.

Those specs look great. It appears that the (
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/news_archive/20.htm#dell_new_ips) U2211H is meant to replace the 2209WA, and the U2311H is the model just above it. And it's probably worth pointing out that quite a few people in that HF thread seem to be replacing their 2209WAs with U2311Hs.

Honestly, for 20 quid difference I think I'd go with the U2311H. I have the 2209WA, love it, but if I had to buy now I'd pony up and get the new 23'' one. It's slightly larger, which will make a difference if you wanna watch movies from farther away sitting on the couch, it's full HD and has a lower dot pitch. On that note, if you don't want the 23'' one you should still buy the new U2211H over 2209WA for the same price - on paper, it appears to have the same quality panel behind it, but full HD and lower dot pitch. Really, the only thing to mull over is that if you want a sharp image you'll have to run your games at the native 1920x1080, if that's a problem for you.
I got mine from PC Buy It, and I was happy with them. Links and prices (inc. VAT), add £8 for standard next day delivery:
(

Thanks for the input. I've not run at those kinds of resolutions before - but a quick check of reviews says that with my Radeon 5770HD I should get acceptable frame rates in games.

As I say above, I've got the NEC MultiSync EA231WMi and it seems as if this Dell gives it a dam good run for its money and is cheaper to boot It seems all that's majorly different is that the NEC has an ambient light sensor (which I've turned off as it irritates me)
(The Dell's also got a better response time than the NEC.)
(
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2311h.htm) Here's TFT Centrals review.
I'd go for it. The black depth on the NEC is just so damn good and this Dell is rated even better.
I'd have bought the Dell if it had been out when I was shopping.
