I've finally got around to getting a new computer desk, one that has more room for a monitor. So I'm planning on replacing my trusty 17" Hitachi SuperScan Elite 751. I should be able fit up to a 28" beast (though, my bank account may not support that idea, we'll see), and I need up to the minute recommendations for Thief-worthy monitors. I've read a few postings here, but nothing seems current. So if you have any monitors to suggest, monitors to stay away from, review links I should read, I would appreciate your help. Thanks all!

as most people know Ive done a lot of testing in this area so I would recommend the monitor I currently own - 20" NEC 20WGX2Pro £300.
But thats a year old now and there maybe better monitors out there, what to look for is LED matrix backlight based S-PVA or S-MVA or S-IPS models types.
When I get back from the ace cafe, Ill have a look for whats out there, what part of the work are you in? give me the web address of some of your fave online places to buy computer kit from.

Thanks for the offer of assistance.
One place I use a lot is (
http://www.newegg.com/) NewEgg. It helps that they generally have it in stock at a storage site about 5 miles away from me, so I can order today and get it tomorrow. Unfortunately they do not have any local storefronts.
(
http://www.frys.com/) Fry's Electronics has local warehouse stores, so I could go there and inspect a monitor before purchasing it. For me that is a big plus.
That said, I haven't bought a monitor in years, 10 or 15 years or so, from anyone. So I am not hung up on NewEgg or Fry's, necessarily, for this purchase.

I've got (
http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfo/peripherals/monitor_2408wfp/pd.aspx?refid=monitor_2408wfp&s=dfo) this dell 24 inch monitor here. I would recommend you buy something at least 22 inches. Anything less, what's the point?
The picture on this monitor is bright. Does dark colors well too. The clarity is wonderful too. It also comes with memory card slots, and USB ports on the side. You plug your monitors cable into your USB port on the back of your computer or where ever, and then it acts like a hub. I don't have any USB ports on the front of my tower, so this is a good solution to plugging in USB things.

Bigger isnt always better, the problem with 22" monitors is there are displaying the same res as a 20", which means the pixels arent going to be a sharp. I actully tested that dell you have and the two areas it failed on compared to the NEC was the viewing angle and black levels.

Don't you mean the same number of pixels are spread over a larger surface which makes the 22" monitors have a lower resolution (fewer pixels per unit of area) than 20" monitors? In any event, that's why I have been waiting until I could fit a larger monitor in my workspace. The 26-28" range of monitors have more pixels and thus better resolutions (and cost more), no?

The 26-28" will probably only do 1920*1200 which is the same as the 23-24" and yes will cost a LOT more.

1920X1200 should be plenty for me. I'm currently running 1024x768 because, while higher resolutions are supported by both my card and monitor, the images are too small for me to see comfortably. That's why I want as much real estate as I can fit and afford: to allow me to go up in resolution.

I don't know what monitor you were evaluating biker, but this one is clearly seen at angles. Even like really off it's center axis. The darks are excellent. It's not a cheap monitor. Dell is actually considered one of the better LCD makers. Look for the Ultra Sharp line of the size you want. They are good and clear.
