well depends wut u want
i found a good long sword charcter is a redgaurd,but low magicka tho.
for a good balance between magic and fighting(battlemage) pick a dark elf
for a good blunt or axe skill pick an orc or a nord.
an imperial is good if you want a high mercantile or speechcraft skill
high elfs arnt good unless u NEED high magika. They are vurnerable to 75% of all destructive attacks(ie fire, ice, poisen....)
beasts.....well i had an argonion battle mage and i didnt like it at all. his endurance wasnt very high so he would always get knocked down. but i didnt know how to create a good player back then.
