Do the majority of the people really have a problem with it? I highly doubt it.
I find your research inconclusive.

But it's a matter of principle, and I already dropped my nuts in the ring so I might as few finish what I started.
Unlike our e-mail conversations...
oh snap!

I remember reading a study that said (Americans at least) over-estimate the risks of smoking and would smoke more if they knew what the actual risks are. I didn't read Convict's link but a possible explanation for such a sharp drop of in the harm of smoking the marginal cigarette is (

There are plenty of legal products that you aren't allowed to use in public. Why is this particular one of such a concern beyond "you were able to do it before"?
Isn't that enough of a reason in itself? Besides, I'm not talking about wanting to fire up a pack of Colts and run around blowing smoke in babies' faces; I'm talking about reaching a reasonable compromise that allows non-smokers to enjoy a pleasant, smoke-free evening (like the bunch of purse-waving nancy-boys they are), while at the same time not completely putting the screws to people who enjoy a smoke while they have a few beers.

You may have noticed that earlier in this thread I mentioned the fact that I no longer smoke, so the screws in question aren't being applied to me. Personally, smoking or non doesn't mean a damned thing to me, although I must admit that beer with the buds is when I miss it the most. That doesn't mean that our current approach is fair, right, or reasonable.

That's half the point of the smoking ban. Not only is it intended to protect people from the effects of secondhand smoke, it's supposed to dissuade people who only smoke socially. TPTB are trying to break this (bizarre) mental link between smoking and drinking and I applaud them for that.

I have no opinion on the study you quoted. I didn't see your post before because I tend to tune out everything you say.
My basic research, if you can even call it that, revolved around looking some shit up in Wikipedia and then googling the results to get some additonal perspective. Not exactly exhaustive, but welcome to the internet.
You might not like what I say but I'm usually right and I can back up what I say - I'm not here to be popular. The British Medical Journal meta-analysis trumps other (uncited) studies anyway.
TGGP you make a fair point (although were smokers trying to cut back in the 1950s since generally people didn't think there was a problem?) it was suggested that the mechanism for a large effect from a small dose of smoking might be because of platelet aggregation.
