Good point, but it is much nicer to drink in a place where smoking is banned, than where it is not,
That sentence is an oxymoron if you're truly concerned about your health.

Only if you're a gibbering imbecile.
Drinking does not necessarily harm your health. Smoking does necessarily harm your health.

OH? (

Only if you never drink more than 1 drink a day maybe. Get your facts straight before calling somebody an imbecile.

Stronts' facts are straight in this case. Why did you assume that 'drinking' must mean 'drinking to excess'?
Drinking red wine in moderation can be beneficial to your health.

!. Most young people drink more than 1 drink
2. I guess maybe the number of drunk posting threads around here might lead one to believe they drink to excess. (either that or they can't handle thier liquor)
3. most drinkers lie about how much they actually consume. denial anyone?

None of this makes your oxymoron remark any more true, though.

Yeah, you're right.
But it amazes me no end the people who bitch about secondhand smoke and then go and get intoxicated every night.
If you drink enough to get intoxicated, you're over the limit of benefiting your health and into the area of harming your health.
My bad, I'm sure every drinker here only has 1 glass of red wine after dinner.

I am amused by all the statistics being thrown around with no links to factual medical papers.
Um, wouldn't it be reasonable to think that the CDC's stats are based on coroners' reports? How much more factual does it get?

tBM makes some good points.
It's funny how this thread started with a strange anecdote and was quickly hijacked by OMFG smoking is bad, fossil fuels kill...blahh blahh.
I don't smoke too much anymore...about a pack a week. I don't have any problem with no smoking in most places of public accommodation. But I think such rules need to be imposed by the people who own such places. If enough people want or don't want a non-smoking environment then somebody can set up shop to accommodate either group. It's called the free market. My house, my rules so to speak.
But as is, in the US such rules are imposed by governments. The same governments that make more money on a pack of smokes than the company that makes them. Don't smoke anywhere well tell you not to and hand over your money. Does this make ANY sense? If smoking is sooooo dangerous then why not just ban the product?
And the "well I can't get a job anyplace else" argument is so full of shit. If you have a law degree, pierced nose and a tattoo on your face, good luck climbing to the top in that profession. Sometimes life ain't fair. Get over it. You'll be much happier in the long run.

This is just silly. First of all second hand smoke causes inhalation of carcinogens
against your will, whilst drinking is a choice YOU make.
Second of all you can most certainly drink more than one unit a night for many years and not suffer any ill health as a result. Especially if you are male. Besides, even if you do have a few more as long as you aren't having your weekly quota all in one or two binge sessions or aren't doing it consistently you'll be ok.
