Please ask your basic (newbie) questions in here. - by scumble

Oh, oh! Actualy NEWBIE questions. I know nothing about programming, but I occasionally look at this forum to check at the progress being made on turning T3ed into something decent :p So anyways, just curious about progress being made on certain things, any answers would be great -
1. Has anyone attempted to add in old school style briefing videos? Is it even possible? I mean, using a video maker, toss together screenshots, concept art, briefing sound file, use proper colours, and toss in when the mission begins. I know it's not NEARLY that simple, but I think it's understandable.
2. Is there any chance for being able to lock/unlock doors at will now?
3. Readables that you can pick up? Scrolls and such?
4. Would it be at all possible to go in and switch out the maps in single player Thief 3? Draw up some maps that look more like the ones from the original games?
5. Whatever happened to the sword? I remember a long while back New Horizon posted some screens of getting the sword in game, and mentioned possibly adding it to Minimalist.
6. Disabling automatic zombie poof?
7. Making the Pagans less annoying :p?

1. Totally doable.
2. Available already in T3EnhancED
3. Available in T3EnhancED
5. Wasn't really worth adding. You couldn't do anything more than slash with it. Essentially a glorified, longer dagger.
The rest, I'm not sure. :)

We will have oldschool briefings in our communtiy project "The cabal". So you can really look forward to it... ;)

1. Nobody's actually done it for T3 as far as I know, but T3 can play movies and people have created old-school-style briefings for T1/T2 FMs, so yes this is definitely possible.
2, 3. See NH's post.
4. I didn't have any problem with the maps - were they actually that different from T1/T2 maps? I don't remember. In any case, they all appear to be dynamically loaded (they're in [Thief3]\CONTENT\T3\PCTextures\DynamicallyLoaded), which means they should be nice and easy to replace. Just open up the existing DDS file in an image editor that can read them, make any changes (or complete replacements), and resave it.
5. No proper sword, sorry. :( We simply don't have that level of control.
6. Sounds possible - just a case of modifying the gamesys and some gamesys links. Might have to import new models and textures into T3 for the zombie gib parts, but that is doable.
7. Heh. I assume you mean the speech, in which case it's technically doable but there are some big BUTs. Namely: 1. It's a big effort to re-record all that dialogue. 2. Sound schemas are effing annoying to distribute, because they're huge. Still, if someone wanted to do it badly enough it would be possible. I know I wouldn't be bothering though.
So overall, everything you listed is theoretically possible except for the sword, and the effort involved varies from "pretty easy" to "only attempt this if you're really dedicated". :p

Thanks for all the replies, really great to hear some of the things I asked about can be or already have been done.
A question for NH though - I realize between the Dark Mod, T3ed editing, and whatever else you're up to, you're pretty busy these days. However, is there any chance of another version of Minimalist ever being made, or is the current version as far as you're going to take it?

I think it has gone as far as I'm going to take it really. I might take one last look before I close the vault though. I wouldn't mind putting in the tweaked Minimalist compass from T3EnhancED.

Hi,
I was wondering if some people thought of changing the look of characters a bit. I know Jonn P. improved original meshes, but I think when you play T3 you get to realized pretty quickly all the factions have the same look. For instance, all the guards look alike with different beard sizes. And then, all the hammerite warriors have the same faces as guards.

I think you're refering to textures. I haven't looked very closely at the texture side of characters but they may use the same things. In order to give new textures to characters we'd have to create our own character meshes & reassign the textures to those meshes.
As far as meshes go they are very hard to get working right even (if at all) with the right tools, mainly ActorX plugins for 3ds max & maya. There's been a few failed attempts at creating new characters for t3.

And no successful attempts at creating new textures? What are the links to the unsuccessful attempts and how bad are they?

New textures have certainly been done, both for characters and otherwise. That's what John P's packs update - textures, not meshes.
