I don't know if there is somewhere better to post this on ttlg so I'll have to ask here : I installed 3ds Max recently and configured it according to the tutorial but it won't import static meshes. I installed the .dds plugin for Max also and now I can't save any .dds files in Photoshop. It says there is a "programming error".
I reinstalled Photoshop and the .dds plugin for it but there was no change.
Is this problem familiar to anyone?

Not being able to import static meshes into Max is hardly surprising, you need to find the decompiling tools to turn them back into a format Max can read - the plugin only allows you to export them.
As for the .dds thing, I haven't a clue, but for the sake of clarity: are you using 3DSMax 5.0 or have you updated to 5.1? It might make the difference here.

Ok I thought it allowed you to import them aswell. And I'm using Max 5.1.
I installed Max and Photoshop in the same folder, could that possibly be part of the problem with the .dds plugin?
Thanks,
SS

That might depend on how you mean "the same folder", but it's a possibility.
You don't really need photoshop for the .dds side of things anyway, but if you can't see the textures in Max it's going to be very difficult to get your stuff textured.

They are both in C. Maybe if I installed Photoshop again but in Program Files it might make a difference(?).

I installed Photoshop and the dds plugin on my external HD but it still says there is a program error when I try to save the dds files. I installed it on the HD again and uninstalled the dds for 3Ds Max but it was no different. I get this message regarding the dds plugin when I start Max. Something about a dual installation, I can't remember exactly.
Looks like I will have to choose one over the other.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I don't use photoshop for the dds - I either bodge it through the same plugin but through PaintShopPro, or I use DDSConverter.

:laff: guys, this is quite funny!!
uninstall everything and reinstall (obviously in separated folder)
If still it didn't works, then is a registers problem, so you'll have to reinstall Windows.

Yeah, yeah, and you should re-install your brain for blabbing such bollocks. Says a programmer, bah.
ShadowSneaker - try to install 3ds 5.0, then install the 5.1 upgrade, and after that copy/set up the plugins according to the original documentation. I don't know why you need .dds plugin for max, as it recognizes this format both in material library and in viewports (use metalbump option).
If the problem persists maybe you should try to use Gimp instead - it's free, it has all plugins you need (dds format and normalmap filter) and its usage is similar to Photoshop.

Since there is a dds plugin for Max and the tutorial on Fleshworks links you to it I assumed it was necessary to install it. I will do as you say and if it doesn't work out then I will look at Gimp.
Thanks Judith.
