Yeah, I think if I am going to get on the VR train, I'm more and more inclined to opt for PSVR.
It's still a hefty investment, but much more attractive than the amount of money I'd have to spend to bring my PC up to spec. While my graphics card is allegedly fine (GTX970), my CPU's a 5 year old i7. And if that's out of date, you can guarantee my motherboard is too. Then there's the cooling for a new CPU, and of course, my RAM's probably not as up to date as it should be. So on top of the price for a Vive or Rift, I'm estimating I'd have to spend an additional £500 to upgrade my system.
So in total, to get the full on VR experience on PC, I'd be looking at over a grand. Sod that. Maybe once I've finished buying a flat.
PSVR on the other hand, I already have the PS4, one Move controller and charging station, so I'd be looking at one extra move controller, the PS4 camera and the PSVR itself, probably more like £400. That's much more palatable and may even give me a reason to use the PS4 beyond Netflix.

As someone who did just that after plonking the 970 into his old system, if you're willing to settle for a Skylake i5, that should be about £400; add more if you're wanting to upgrade to 16 GB RAM.
Having said that, I don't think you actually need a new CPU/mobo/RAM if you're able to OC your i7. Before I upgraded I had a first-gen core i5, and at 4.2 GHz it smoked pretty much everything I threw its way except for Rise of the Tomb Raider, which is still more GPU-limited than it is CPU-limited. I decided to upgrade anyway mostly because I wanted to worry less about power consumption and CPU temps.

I'm concerned about the PlayStation VR's head tracking. Lag and/or imprecision seems likely with their setup?

As with you, I'm not at all convinced that it's necessary to upgrade even Sandy Bridge-based i7s as yet; certainly I haven't done so. My main worry is that the P67-based board I bought has been a temperamental little swine from the moment I bought it, so if only to finally rid myself of it I'm considering an upgrade to either a Broadwell-E or Kay Lake model later this year.
And it
would be nice to be able to play a game without sending the ambient room temperature soaring.
The old Radeon 7850 graphics card will probably need to be replaced as well, naturally.

Sony is installing some demo kiosks, starting today, at various Gamestops and Best Buys around the U.S. About 30 locations today, and many more a week from today on the 24th. You can check out where the closest one to you his on this page, with times and dates and all that:

Might wander over there after work tonight and check it out.
