I play games on it, and its also Freeview box and recorder allowing me to watch digital TV and record stuff onto the 80Gb HD (for people outside UK, I don't know what the deal is elsewhere).
So I've been wondering a few things.
a. Can I copy this stuff onto another HD?
b. Can I use a usb HD with the PS3? Doesn't seem so.
Anyone know?

a. You cannot copy protected content to another drive. You CAN back up saves and anything else that is unprotected. I believe you can re-download the protected content later? There might be another method for migrating your content to a new drive, but I'm not familiar with it.
b. Yes, you can use USB hard drives and USB flash drives, etc. I've backed up my saves prior to repartitioning to install Linux using this method.

Regarding your second question, your USB HDD needs to be FAT32 for the PS3 to be able to read it. NTFS is a no go as of now, I'm afraid.

FAT32? What is this, the 90's?

FAT32 is the standard file system for external drives and flash memory because it's supported by practically every OS, unlike NTFS. Eg Many Lunix distros have difficulty reading NTFS formatted drives.

That, and since FAT isn't a journalling file system (unlike NTFS) it puts less wear on the device, which is particularly important for flash media like USB sticks, SD cards etc.
[edit] Plus, just about any modern Linux distro can read and write NTFS no problem. I've been doing so for about two years now. [/edit]

The more I look into what my PS3 can do the more impressed I am. Seems I can set up my PC as a media server or something and then stream audio and video files to the PS3.
One thing that is odd about the PS3 is the lack of simple audio output. I have some spare 2.1 speakers with a normal jack and I cannot use them. Shame, as the bass speaker would be awesome. At some point I'll be getting a 37" widescreen LCD TV and I doubt the sound will have the bass of this bad boy :(

You can just connect the 2.1 thing to the TV's headphone output or buy a cheap adapter cable to hook it up to its RCA connectors (if it has them - mine does) though. Consoles haven't had headphone jacks since the Genesis.

True, true.
