I followed the instructions from a thread to remove the light gem for my ghost replay of Mystic Gems 2 Heart of Bohn, and I have to say, it is astonishing how much the feel of the game changes. I'm clearly not playing worse, as I chose a FM I was sure had good work on the sync between the shadows that you see and how visible you are, and I'm not being discovered more than usual. But oh, the feeling, the little insecurity I feel now without the straight answer of how invisible I am being right there on the screen is really big. Already tried Ascend The Dim Valley last night with the same setup and it was an experience. It has really refreshed Thief for me (not that it was needed, but it's sure welcome). I encourage you to try and see for yourself.

Posting this here for future reference, cause it is possible to toggle the health bar and light gem mid game without much hassle:
1. Create a file called `hide_hud` in your Thief directory, and put these two lines into it:
2. Create another filed called `show_hud` in your Thief directory, and put these lines in it:
3. Edit `user.bnd` and add these lines to it. If there's already bindings for F9, or you prefer different keys, edit them accordingly:
4. Play Thief! Press F9 followed by Esc to hide the HUD (sorry, the switch out
to objectives is necessary to make the config change take effect). Then
press Alt+F9 followed by Esc to show the HUD again.
5. Profit, I guess?

ground shadows would make it easy, if the author made lighting correct with shadows

That's precisely the thing you gotta be careful about. I distinctly remember MG2 Heart of Bohn doing it, and it's a blast. Somehow it encourages me to try and ghost a lot more, instead of playing whac-a-mole.
