Shouldn't be the case. The only difference in terms of game mechanics between the DTS and the sword are that the dts does more damage (20 vs 10) and the DTS is a cone effect weapon, so it does 20 damage FIVE times (which is why the 'smack' sound is so loud - it's five simultaneous sounds).
So yeah, DTS should always beat the sword when it comes to smacking down doors.

Okay, so when was the last time you knocked open a locker with the Dragon's Tooth?

All the time, actually
As has been said, some things need Mastered Low-Tech/Combat Strength/both.

Way it works for movers (for the uninitiated, that's locker doors, doors, etc) in DX: if they're breakable (and some just plain AREN'T), they have a number of damagepoints (between 1 and 100), and a minimum damage threshold.
If the thing you're using to damage them does damage below the damage threshold, YOU DO NO DAMAGE.
Combat stength aug applies a multiplier to your base damage of x1.25, 1.5, 1.75 and 2.0 (depending on level). if you don't have it on/don't have it, it gives a multiplier of 1.0.
Skill then ADDS to this multiplier, in the range of 0 - 1.
So full skill gives 2x damage, full combat strength give 2x damage, full both gives 3x damage.
This is BASE damage. Actually, with movers, this is all that matters, since they don't have locational damage.
A lot of movers in DX have a min damage threshold of 50. This it to keep them consistent with turrets and cameras: these can't be damaged with weapons that do less than 50 points of damage in a single whack. (Except explosions and sabot, which still damage, but at 25% and 50% respectively)
So at low levels, with say, sniper rifle (25 dam) or DTS (25 dam), you won't break 'em. At master level rifle/lowtech + combat aug, you now do 50 dam with these weapons, so you can destroy cameras, turrets, and often movers.
So with a sword (10 dam) you'd do 20 with full skill/aug, or 30 with both. Often insufficient.
With the DTS (20 dam) you'd do 40, or 60 with both, which is often easily enough to break movers. And remember thats 40/60 BASE damage, and the DTS does that FIVE times, so for a full aug/skill whack that's 300 points of damage.
If you hit an enemy in the head, that's 8 times damage, for a total of 2400 points of damage in total (yes)...
DX damage code is weird.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks.

That's one of the dumbest things in the game. I felt like just telling her "fine, clear the way to your mother's secret computer network yourself, bitch."
I always interpreted Nicolette's outbursts as shock and surprise (at finding all this secret stuff, in her own childhood home no less) on her part, not as reluctance, annoyance, or petulance at the idea of doing some work.
I find the idea of finishing the game with knives alone intriguing. I don't think I've ever used the throwing knives at all; are they consumed when you make a kill with them, or can you get them back?
Dr. Dumb_lunatic on 29/11/2005 at 16:30
They're like crossbow darts: you only get them back if they hit level geometry (walls, etc). Oh, or movers.
Actually, though, if you've got good enough low tech/pistol skills, and are lacking any other 'whacking' weapon, throwing knives/crossbow darts are good for breaking semi-tough cupboard doors and the like, since they don't get used up: they stick in the door and then fall to the ground when the door breaks.

Most everybody carries at least one LAM as a handy dandy door opener.
ZylonBane on 30/11/2005 at 22:00
Silly me, on my first couple playthroughs I somehow managed to forget the bit from training that tells you about the whole "grab LAMs before they go off" thing.
Once I rediscovered that little fact, my LAM supply became much more plentiful. :thumb:
