On my last run of SS1, I remember thinking that, even with combat and plot set to 3, I always had tonnes of ammo for all my guns and plenty of explosives to play around with. That got me thinking: wouldn't it be cool to have that same survival horror, scrounging around for ammunition feeling that early runs of SS2 had. My slightly crude solution is to self-impose a rule whereby you are not allowed to loot the corpses of any enemies you kill, though fixed corpses are okay. Given that the majority of your ammo comes from enemies, this should put quite a squeeze on resources.
I've just done level 1, and remember that great feeling when you get the pistol and realise you've finally got a decent weapon with plenty of ammo? I have two magazines. I have 3 clips for the dart gun (and 4 clips of tranqs, but they're pretty crap). I'm playing with every difficulty on 3 except cyber which is set to 1 (I don't have much love for cyberspace, particularly the last fight). I made a point of collecting all the goodies on the level, spending around 35 precious minutes on it, but I have amassed twelve frag grenades, three gas and EMP grenades, two nitro packs, one earthshaker, the magpulse and magnum, as well as a few batterys, one I-cad battery and a medkit.
I'm worried about how I'm going to manage the harder levels, where exec bots, warrior cyborgs and other nasties respawn en masse. Energy levels only stretch so far, and not all levels have lots of easy to reach rechargers. Is there much difference in efficiency between the low and high settings on the energy weapons by the way?
So, am I crazy to attempt this? Has anyone else tried anything similar? Care to place bets on how far I'll actually get before my time runs out or I give up out of frustration?

It's perfectly possible to complete the game using only the pipe and laser rapier. ;)

Yes, it will only be a bit difficult until you get the Rapier. After that, at least for me, the game wouldn't change that much, since I use the Rapier so often that I believe I wouldn't need that much ammo.

Hmm, I've never really used the laser rapier much, except for on invisible mutants (because there's an apocalyptic number of them on deck 3). It's very powerful, sure, but I prefer to pop round corners with a gun, the flechette perhaps being my most used weapon.

I always loved the Assault Rifle and Magnum Pistol. Pure firepower and this sweet sound *dang* *dang* *dangdangdang* ^^ To sad, theres not much ammo around. Maybe I should give it a try - Shock @ AR + Magnum only?

What are you talking about? There is lots of Magnum ammo around. The AR has a bit less, but normally you can get enough from the Exec Bots. What I really like is to use the AR with Penetrator ammo. That one is indeed rare.
(I shouldn't talk so much about System Shock. Inevitably, it leads me to starting yet another run, which I just did last night) :p
