I just started to get back into Morrowind - I never finished it the first time, got probably halfway through the main quest before losing stamina. This time, though, I *will* finish it. Playing this time as a Redguard long-blade specialist with a little magic on the side.
First I felt like I was a little tired of the world and the lore, but to spice things up a bit I went and followed (
http://morrowind2009.wordpress.com/) this excellent guide. Even just getting a hint about the existence of the MGE was fantastic - I found that using its 'distant lands' feature made the game so much more interesting and exciting, even without any sort of texture or mesh upgrades. Something about being able to see further just turns me on :p. I can't wait for my download cap to reset at the end of the week so I can get Tamriel Rebuilt and the host of other major land addons.
On second thoughts... maybe I won't get the main quest finished this time :p.

I envy you. For me, any game is pretty much finished when no undiscovered spots are left on the map and absolutely nothing can bring it back into the world of living :(. It's a great game. But unknown locations turn me on :p

Haha, well, that's part of it too - I obviously haven't covered the terrain as thoroughly as you. So in the case of the MGE it's just letting me see a lot of terrain I've never seen before - and wouldn't with the paltry default view distance.

I think after I installed MGE myself I levitated the rest of the game - just couldn't get enough of the sight :p

Just got the Game of the Year Edition from Amazon. I'm finally ready to make up for all the years of missing out on this gem. Needless to say I'm super excited :D . So I wondered if any longtime players could suggest the most essential mod(s) for me complete Morrowind noob to install on top of the two expansions, to make the game even more epic. Will start installing this monster of a game tomorrow so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

This thread really caught my eye, as it's been a few years since I've played Morrowind and I was looking for a little project. I followed the Morrowind in 2009 guide linked to by the OP, and have spent around about 6 hours now following it almost word for word.
I thought I'd just about finished, so I booted the game up. It looked amazing - what little I saw...
The game crashes to desktop with an error that states I'm missing the following NIF files:
meshes\tr\b\TR_pb_IMP_head02.NIF
meshes\TR\a\tr_A_stud_leath_UA.NIF
meshes\TR\o\TR_cont_crate_L_01
I was also missing a bunch of meshes\Ice\NR NIF files from my Robe replacement mod, but I'd stuck them in the wrong place.
Anybody got any ideas where I can find these missing files? I've been back through all the mods/pathes I've d/l today, but none of them seemed to have come with an meshes\TR folders...

Is Tamriel Rebuilt an option?
pagan on 7/3/2010 at 11:49
Yeah, Tamriel Rebuilt was the problem I think, or more specifically the 'Census and Excise' part of the TR mods. I went through loading and reloading the game with various data files switched on and off, and that was the one that seemed to be causing the CTD.
I also switched 'weathered signs' off because that was causing several error messages. Bit annoying 'cos I've used that one before and it's great! Made myself feel better by getting the classic IndybankWC mod tho - so I can buy myself a pad in Caldera!
Another odd thing to note, however, is that by following this guide something weird happens that has a major effect on several major guild missions. Specifically those that require visiting Maar Gan. For some strange reason, as soon as I get there, I'm branded a notorious outlaw and attacked by the guards. I'm gonna try visiting there and then teleporting out to see if I can buy off the required people. Will update later.

So much for that plan. Turns out you can include Gnaar Mok in the problems too. I took a boat there and was instantly attacked by guard and citizen alike (specifically those that have been added by the 'Comes Alive' mod). I had previously Marked myself next to a Thieves Guild 'price on your head' person. Only when I Recalled myself there, I found out I was wanted for 50,000 septims. He could take care of it for 25,000 - but I only had 2,000! Then I got attacked by a Comes Alive Rogue who was in the Corner Club!
Oh well - guess I'll play elsewhere until I'm hard enough and rich enough to take on the guards!
