Played Thief for years before discovering... - by Cigam

Since this has come back. I have only recently discovered that you can safely blackjack some big bots to death.
You can sneak behind them and start clubbing, and they will just stagger but be unable to turn around. Bit like when you hack at an archer and they are unable to get a shot off.
This doesn't work for all of them unfortunately, most of the ones I tried it on will turn around and fire, but it works for at least the following ones.
The big bot in Eavesdropping.
The two in Soulforge who travel to the opening area once the mission starts.
The single big bot at the back of factory bay D,
Using this technique I confirmed something I had suspected that I had seen once, but thought I might have misremembered. The big bots do have a flee mode. There comes a point during the clubbing where it becomes clear that the next blow will scrap them. Stop hitting and they will run away. I'm sure everyone else knew about their flee mode, but I didn't :)
Wish I had known this when attempting to Iron Man Soulforge on Expert. Could have saved myself the four arrows and mine I used to deal with the above three.

If you're lucky and get in at the right angle you can also club them to death from the front. It makes a lot of noise, but if you continue pressing into them while they attempt retreat, all their shots will be fired behind you and do no damage. I've only done this successfully a handful of times, but it can be done.

Since this came back up I have re-read the early pages. And apart from cringing at some of my own earlier entries (how could I have spent more than 15 years not knowing that you can blackjack flashbombed enemies, or ones who are searching for you) this caught my eye.

I remember it took me a couple of playthroughs to realise that moss arrows actually cover a lot more that just the little blobs that appear. I always looked at it and thought "pffft that's useless" and didn't ever use them
I had forgotten that I had thought the same and that only the small green circles were safe.
Is anyone else willing to admit that they used to try to precision hop from green circle to green circle, thinking that was how you crossed them noiselessly?

Yep. I don't know when I realised that moss arrows actually deaden a pretty wide circle (even a little beyond the four outer blobs), but it was gamechanging!

I just realized while trying to test what works on a new custom AI, in a recent FM (name withheld to not spoil) that the player can block the bug beast bug attack with water! Just hit it before the cloud gets to you, and it will be dispersed.

I did not know that. I suppose it is too much to hope that a fire arrow will blow up a burping burrick?
Speaking of things I didn't know about arrows. Apparently you can douse torches with gas arrows, and unlike with water arrows, this won't alert the guard standing underneath it (or maybe that is only in T3?)
Also recently heard that you can disable the gas traps in Masks?
I heard these while watching some Ghost Let's Plays. I also discovered, thanks to these let's plays, that for the first mission of Thief 3 dousing the lionhead torch does not open the window, but another entrance. I have played that mission at least six times and always just doused the torch first thing then assumed that the window I then climbed in was opened as a result of this. Nope, that window is always open, and it was another entrance being opened elsewhere.

Whoa I want to try this at some point to see.

I did know this, and it I feel like it has more range. In some cases I can put out two if they are close enough, but still even a water can't do. I have also used them in cases where I couldn't directly hit the torch area with something in the way, it still did the trick.

What do you mean? Are you talking about using a lock pick?

Hahaha that's too funny. There are many superstitions I've dispelled on repeated replays of games.

I knew that for a very long time, but just 2 years I got interested in how exactly does it work. So after entering 3rd floor via secret passage you enter room with 3 locks and levers. Each lever controls gas trap in 2 rooms and only one lever can be disabled at a time. If you disable second, first lever turn on. Getting through secret passage: closer lever on the left controls first room on both sides, further left - further 2 rooms on the left, further right - further 2 rooms on the right. That's the whole philosophy.

Ah thanks, will check that out next time I am there. And that is another thing I only discovered recently: the two secret passageways on the 3rd floor.
